Depends on what your riding experience and type of riding preferred !

As someone with 48 years of riding and racing experience, average 20k miles annually of varying types of riding, and attended many funerals of riders, my advice will differ than 99% of the “look at me” crowd.

With more details, some logical/practical advice awaits.

Otherwise, become an organ donor, because as I get older, I may need some parts.

Very well said.
I was going to ask the same exact questions.

Something with low power and light weight would be your best choice. You will learn much more, much faster on a 300cc bike than you would on a 600cc or higher sportbike. Probably live longer too.

And get some training. A track day is a great place to learn control and technique.

I will echo all of this. A common mistake is you guy buy a liter bike, or even a 600 sportbike, get yourself in trouble (physically) and give it up. Definitely something small like a 300 and definitely do some track days where you can learn in a safe and controlled environment.

Whatever you do, wear a full helmet. I was hit 16 months ago and lost vision in my left eye on top of being partially paralyzed. The full helmet would have saved my vision. Also consider loud pipes. The lady who hit me never heard or saw me and cut across 3 lanes of traffic to make an exit from a parkway. I was riding a Harley Electra Glide. I loved riding and miss it but don't think I'll be doing it again.

I still have this bike, I've changed a few things, but mostly it's still the same. This was on a trip to Haleakala on Maui, back during a brief happy period when we had an inter-island ferry, ca. 2008. I can't believe that was a decade ago!

Little Italy on the ferry. Bologna, Maranello, and Modena represented in one shot. :) Just happened to be on the ferry the same day the Ferrari club was going to Maui. Ferraris everywhere.

Finally had some time to ride, and the weather cooperated as well.
After two months of rain and/or 40 degrees weather, today was sunny and high 60s.

I've been riding for years. I've not owned many bikes in that time, unlike like some people, and presently have only one in the garage (used to be three). That's a 1987 BMW K75. I customised it with retro details to hark back to the old airhead R-bikes from the 50's. Because of my post count, I can't post links or pictures, but if you use the search term "k75 retro" in Google, you should hit upon my blog with pictures of it.

Please post that BMW when you can. I want to see it.

Just trade my CBR600RR for a Harley Sportster 48. Got some riding in today here in CO. Have to take advantage when possible.

Pictures of the BMW K75 Retro are below. Taken this autumn, this was a great day for riding. It was sunny, just warm enough for comfort and lovely colours.

The bike is a mixture of a '87 BMW K75, '93 BMW K1100 and '55 BMW R52, with Corbin seat and various other aftermarket paint, bits and bobs to complete the retro-BMW theme. More info at http://k75retro.blogspot.ca/

I strongly endorse the full face helmet.

I became a true believer when I found myself sliding face down and watching the asphalt about an inch and a half from my face.

My face ain't much so I need to protect what little looks I got.

I’ve been riding or racing some type of motorcycle since the age of 8 (48 yrs), and now the journey/adventure is the most important aspect of riding. The bike itself is but a tool that best supports the preferred type of ride. I’ve posted a few bikes in this thread, but not any ride photos, so below is a link to a recent ride that some of you may enjoy.

Travelled the Continental Divide from southern Colorado to near the Canadian border through Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, then back down through Idaho, Utah, and back through Colorado. 3,800 miles of the trip was gravel/dirt, crossed the Divide 14 times, 12 were dirt. Experienced 13,200 ft crossing, 26 deg low, 92 deg high, rain, sleet, snow, abandoned mining towns, remote ranches, a sunset watching a herd of elk play, close encounter with a moose, watched beavers play in a pond, experienced the aspen trees turn to gold, rode the Magruder Corridor via Elk City ID, Had a small mechanical issue 116 miles out on a dirt road, and the list goes on ..................................

About to go test ride a bike today.

I’ve missed having two bikes since I sold my Hayabusa two years ago.

I don’t ride much in town, I tend to get out on the country roads and do my best to get lost. Sometimes I end up on unpaved roads that just aren’t any fun at all on a 750 pounds bmw k1600. They are actually terrifying lol.

After much thought, I think the Ducati Desert Sled is the bike I want as number 2, so I am going to test ride one today.

The brand didn't matter to me, but I always used full synthetic lubes in my motorcycles.
