Colonoscopy anyone?

Yesterday I had my first colonoscopy. Both, my wife and I were having the procedure after spending the previous day drinking clear liquids and shi**ing water. While my wife appeared at ease in the next cubicle, joking and laughing with the nurse, I suffered a vasovagal syncope when my nurse had trouble with my IV and my blood sprayed all over her scrub top. For a moment, I thought I was going to die, as my heart rate went from forty-five to 150 beats per minute. My entire body became drenched in sweat, and I could not seem to catch my breath. Several nurses reacted with great ease and were very comforting. After about 20 minutes, I got another IV, and the procedure itself was very easy to tolerate.
My wife laughed and laughed when she was told of all the commotion I caused, and the fact that I asked her sister, who was going to drive us home, for my Rolex BLNR to relax me, waiting to go home.
I have had probably, hundreds of needles, but never had that kind of reaction before.
To all those who are going to have this procedure - it is not that bad! In my defense, it may have been dehydration, not the pu**y my wife suggests I was...

I got the blue plate special after I turned 50. That's the scope at both ends.

I've had 4, colon cancer runs in my family and I had my first polyps removed at 30. The last two times I did it with no anesthesia, prefer it that way.

Firstly, good to see you are still around! :-)

Secondly, I'm glad you and your wife made it through the procedure okay.

I guess I have something to look forward to in due time. These procedures surely do scare me, but your light-hearted story has made it a little easier for me to digest.

Forgive me because clearly to me familiarity breeds contempt, or in this case "ease of mind" but there are zero worries. It's a procedure that has been perfected and is routine to the crews that preform them. Preparing for it the day before is the bad part!

Been there, done that twice now... there are worse things! I always make sure that I have plenty of reading material the day before because... well you know, lots of time on the ole throne!

Ulcerative colitis sufferer. To that point, I have them fairly regularly. I am in a study now for a new drug, so I get to have them every 6 months now. Really is no big deal.
And BTW...I prefer the Italian term....Innuendo!!!

I was wondering what was the IV line for? The prep is worse than the procedure itself.

Appreciate this.

I'm at an age now where all these things are starting to crop up on my preventive care roadmap - great threads and members like yourself really help to ease that fear.

I'm hoping when I need one, the PillCam will be the standard method.

I've had 3 colonoscopies and 3 gastroscopies and I've had 2 cystoscopies. I hate the day before procedure. The doctor that I use is a pro and these are pretty much all he does. I've had little things that needed to be dealt with. I'm down to every 3 years from every 5 years. I can't wait for 2017.

The prep is killer, but the procedure is fine. I usually get an endoscopy (esophagus) and colonoscopy at the same time (using different tubes, of course).

I've had two and they've removed at least no fewer than 40 polyps.

I'm due to have one next month. The preps have already arrived and they want me to go through the routine on the two consecutive days before the procedure.

They said I wasn't as clean last time as I should have been, but they were able to complete the procedure.

I didn't bother to tell them that I'd forgotten to take the citrus-flavored concoction the day before the cleansing and had taken it the same day.

They were so sure that I needed two that it wasn't worth arguing while I was sedated and all.

This time I've got the process down, so I'll only do it once, as I'm not into that kind of thing for fun and we'll just see if all comes out well.

It should as I had no problems the first time and that time I managed to get it all done correctly.

Virtually identical to my story.

The sad fact is that we're idiots if we don't have it done.

The IV is for the Ringer's Lactate solution. It's for hydration and electrolyte replenishment. The IV also makes it easy to administer the Versed, which puts you out. It is also has a short-term memory effect, so you don't remember much.
Thank's for all the kind words. My doctor told me he has done over 30,000 of these procedures. In the end - not such a big deal, not to mention an important preventative measure.

No matter the prep, no matter the procedure, doing nothing is far worse... I am 58 and speak to several friends of mine who say no way ever. I preach to them all the time.. I have had 2 .. One at 50, one at 55 and up next is 60.. one day every five years is nothing to pay for another 25 years (hopefully if the wife does not kill me, lol)

Get it done if you are getting older. I had 19 polyps removed the first time and had to come back a few weeks later to get more removed. My doctor said I would have been dead in two years if I had continued to put it off.

Do it. Get one.

Had one this year (my first) in my mid-50's. Prep is the worst part. Saved me from a bout of colon cancer.

Listen, you may look stylish with a DDII platy on your wrist, but a colostomy bag will really detract from the overall effect you are going for ;).
