I had to postpone mine that was scheduled for Monday. My prep meds are in storage because I confused one identical box for the other and when I opened it, it contained mouthwash--wrong orifice.

Besides, getting a Colonoscopy on the Marine Corps birthday seemed a bit too ironic.

Had my second in August, all is well. Told me to come back in 10 years. My grandfather died from colon cancer back in 1927. Also lost an aunt to it in '05.

Had mine last Nov(50 y/o screening). It was no big deal. The few days and night before were inconvenient but not horrible.
I did it with no sedation or anesthesia.

I'll report back in 10 years when I need to do it again!

I do think it is an important test!

Finally decided it was time....it was painless ...definitely encourage others to have theirs done...worst part was the liquid diet ...they have come along way with the preps that are required prior to the colonoscopy...not as bad as I had anticipated...

Did one 5 years ago.......my GI who did the procedure is also one of my best friends. Needless to say the jokes around the BBQ can get a little sideways.

Been procrastinating on this, my older brother got a "virtual" colonoscopy (x-ray). Told my Dr. I was going to do the same. I have 5 older siblings with no G.I. issues to some extent I am playing the probability game.

"VC is more comfortable than conventional colonoscopy for some people because it does not use a colonoscope. As a result, no sedation is needed, and the patient can return to his/her usual activities or go home after the procedure without the aid of another person."

Dr said OK, but keep in mind they will have to go in anyway if they find polyp, etc.

Don't know what it is about this thread that makes me want to revisit it.

I'll reiterate my advice: If they tell you to bag your clothes and gown-it, fold your clothes prior to bagging them, place in bag in the reverse order you'll put them on. After coming out of Twilight, all you'll want to do is get out of there and pass gas in private. Folded clothes are easier to manage.

Personally, I liked my fasting. It felt great. Have not had the courage to do another fast, but there was something liberating about an empty stomach. The appreciation for a bowl of clear broth and saltine crackers was never higher.

The prep the day before and the process is simple and painless. A total non-issue.......dental work is more annoying.

You can always choose to die early if the idea of someone sticking a camera up there bothers you....

I despise the prep the day before as for me, always miserable.
However, ever since my first one at 50, I now get them every three years due to polyps found and removed each time. Thankfully, potential future issues diverted.
The propofol makes the procedure a joy.
Being placed in a row with a bunch of other guys having just had it done as well is priceless. A farting orchestra.

I had 19 polyps removed the first time 3 of which were adonomas. Soon to be cancerous. Saved my life. I now get them annually and every year they've removed more polyps. Life saving. Don't wait if you think you need one.

I just had one last month. The prep wasn't too bad. I started prepping myself about 5 days early with what I ate. So, the actual liquid prep the day before was very tolerable.

The procedure itself is a non-event.

Colon cancer is almost completely preventable yet it's still a leading cause of death, if you have people who love you, and even if you don't, it's only prudent to take all the precautions you can and get it done. And as has been said already, the prep is the worst part.

What's the thing about the "polyps"? I am considering it in relation to Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux and possibly recalcitrant digestive processes. Where do the polyps come in? How do you know you have polyps? Doc never mentioned that stuff.

The polyps are what may eventually develop into cancer.
They are able to see them and remove them while doing the colonoscopy.
Truly a life saving procedure.

Thanks 123Bf, do polyps cause symptoms that suggest to you that they are present?

I'll let any MDs here chime in but I was told after 50. I got my first one at 50 and if I hadn't the nice doctor told me I would have been dead in two years.

Im 60 never had one....i poop in the bag every other year...Ive read to many horror stories how its become a medical money making racket plus one major hospital was sued for not cleaning the instruments after procedures etc. I have had enough crap done to me that i question everything now ...since I have to pay 20 percent I question even more.
My father who died at 58 who drunk himself to death use to say damn doctors and ins companies try to keep you alive to suck more money out of you.

OMG, these are some classic lines!
Great to see this thread revived and the sharing of stories & experiences on a subject that is seldom discussed.
I had my first at 50 and will be calling this week to schedule my 2nd now that I'm 60. As many have said, the prep is worse than the procedure. No biggie!
