Radiomir 424 vs 721 wristshot

Possibly looking for another PAM to compliment my 233 and looking for something ‘dressy’ I killed half an hour at Bucherer in Selfridges. Very helpful service from the Panerai assistant who liked my 233 on the Vintager.
I love the idea of a California dial and bear in mind, both cases are identical, but the 721 was the clear winner! The anonymous dial is just fabulous and it just seemed to sit better, which is obviously an illusion. Definitely one to consider.....
Until I hit the Blancpain section. (I’ll post in the non-Rolex section)

Very cool side-by-side!

Consider also a 232, which is thinner.

The 721 looks better on your wrist.

If your wrist can take 47 then 232 is good choice. For dressy option I would also look on 45 mm Rads 210 or 610. I have latter and it looks great on black croc and suit.

It really does. It’s amazing how different a dial makes the watch look.

I found 45mm a bit disappointing.

I don’t know, I mean they are almost equally historically challenged references, with the Cali having a bit less of a NS burden to bear and the Rolex coordinated Stern dial adding an interesting angle. But even on the esthetics alone, I think the finer details of the Cali dial, the red gold hands and the exotic numerals resonate better with that beautifully delicate case than the plain standard/anonymous dials of the 720/721 and their blue hands.

Purely the personal preference of a recently made 424 owner though ;)

The 721 is way better on your wrist. You should go with that.

424 and 721 use the same case, right?

I believe so. It’s the glass that differs.

I don't have either but aren't both rads are 47mm diameter and have plexi crystal? Presumably the case are the same....

A tough choice, but I would go with the 721. One of those pieces that may not come along again for a while, with that anonymous dial. I am sure the Cali 424 will still be made in various iterations. I think there is a new one coming this year. But, I do have to admit the Cali dial is fun.

Normally, I don't consider a watch as an investment, but I did find out that the 721 is really holding it's value. I have a few pieces in my collection going to be up for sale soon, including a couple of Panerai models. While the 424 loses in value, the 721 appears to maintain. Probably would never have found this out if I hadn't planned on selling some watches.

When the 721 first came out, I just thought it is so amazing. And, as far as I know, it is pretty historically correct. No other Panerai has the wrist appeal IMO.

The 721 is Plexi crystal and the 424 is sapphire.

Cheers,
Carl
