A cardboard box, some A4 paper and ...
... VOILA!
I've been thinking about palying with lighting, and today, I just tool an old box, taped some paper to the back of it and used another piece to act as a reflector off a halogen table lamp. Can't say I'm too displeased with the results: I left the Tudor's bezel off-centre just to get under JJ's skin! Anyway, test one seems all right. Not it's time to start trying out other kinds of lights, reflectora and backgrounds!

Very nice shots, James. I will have to give that a try. Shoot a pic of the set up so I can see how you did it.

Anyway, here's another shot of the Tudor with the bezel zeroed, just to put JJ's mind at ease! I also played with the colour balance on the camera, and I think I finally got the DJ's dial looking pretty close to how it does in real life:

Hmm - if it's a point and shoot, those F-stops would do whatever they damn well please if you don't have a manual mode, John. I'm using a Canon PowerShot S1IS - it's getting on in years but it's got manual everything, so I can make up for a lot of shortcomings. The one gripe I've always had is that it can't do macro, but my macro attachment is arriving this week, so look out, I'm going nuts!

Thanks, guys!
Craig, once my macro lens arrives, I'll take some real close-up shots of the Tudor's dial - the concentric rings on the subdials are the real star feature of the dial!

You know, there's one with the checked dial available here at the moment, and it's got your name on it. Hell, I'm all the way here in Melbourne, so I think you're the closer target for Lydia no matter what you tell her!
This Tudor definitely has a lot going for it - the case is so thick it makes my SD look anorexic! Poor man's Daytona my arse!

Oooooh, we're on dangerous ground here, Craig - if I can hammer that guy down to the same price as mine, I could help you pick it up for about US$1922.
So, Lydia's a shoe sniper like Eddie Murphy's mom, huh?

Pretty good results James. If I could make one suggestion for you to try, get another cardboard box and cut the sides out, tape the paper over the area cut out, and shine the lights (you will need 2 or 3) from the outside through the paper. This will diffuse the light more and reduce the reflection you have on the cyclops in those shots. The paper can't be too heavy however. I use some old pastic (vellum) drafting sheets from when I used to draw by hand in my job 20 years ago as diffusers, and it works quite well.
Another solution I've seen is using an white translucent kitche garbage can as the entire light box. That will be what I try next. |

Especially the DJ in the second pic, it does have a nice looking dial. Looking forward to seeing some macro shots!

Thanks, guys! Yeah, I do love that Roman/Rhodium dial - Mom had taste, I tell ya!
Thanks for the pointers, Al! My next step is a less makeshift setup. I was thinking of using a taller box and cutting open a translucent detergent bottle to use as a diffuser, and maybe getting a whiter light source like a flourescent. You're right about the reflection - I tried taking photos of Sasha's new Hamilton Ventura, and the deep dial and curved crystal gave me no end of trouble! I'll have to work out the mounting arrangement, but an opening at the top for top-down shots is also on the cards. I'm also thinking of how I can set it up for easy background changes - I love the blue background that Mike uses! JJ, I would have though that you'd associate tripods with Paulie instead.

Yeah, JJ, but if the baby photos are to be believed, Paulie's on a, errr, more stable footing than the rest of us.
