First, let me start by saying, this is NOT a "which watch is better" post. Obviously, the "best" is very subjective and very personalized to ones taste. Instead, I am just curious as to which piece you would purchase if you were to chose between only these two watches.

The first is the classic Patek Phillipe Calatrava. This is no doubt a classic and an icon. Unbelievable craftsmanship and a piece that will certainly be passed down from generations to generations.

The second choice is equally impressive. This is the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak in Rose Gold. This piece is unmistakable and is pure luxury. The fit and finish on the AP is near perfect and the presence on the wrist is second to none. This is equally an heirloom that will be passed from generation to generation in a family.

So, which would you chose? Both have approximately the same price tag and each offer the same features (3 hands and a date function). There is no question that each is as near perfection as you could ever expect, but I am curious as to which one YOU would chose if it were your decision.

I would take the AP, it's a hard choice yes, but it all just comes down to personal taste. The Calatrava is timeless however, while the design of the Royal Oak may become dated. (who knows?) So that's something to think about.

Also, I just LOVE the decoration of the rotor on the AP. (if you haven't seen it, take a look it's beautiful)

I own an RO chrono and love the watch, but I'd have to give the nod to Patek for timelessness. (And I love those dauphine hands.) Also, I think Patek maintains a classier mystique as a brand by not cranking out giant ugly special editions like you find in the Royal Oak Offshore line.

AP with leather is awesome, Patek is a little too small.
I'd get AP RO chrono, or AP Safari ROO
BTW, there is another choice, VC. They have the Overseas (very similar to AP, some models even share the JLC movement), and then the patrimony line, slightly less expensive than Patek, but bigger at 40mm diameter case

the Calatrava and Aquanaut are on my grail list, will have to wait for my kids to be fully grown up and gone before any moves. My youngest is 2 years old

Between those particular two, I'd go with the AP. I like many Pateks, but not that particular piece. Either way, two watches from two of the best manufacturers. You can't go wrong!

Perhaps at least annual calendar.

That Patek is strictly dress while the RO is a little more flexible.

Really comes down to what you want and like.

I think you forgot a big piece of the puzzle that being what you do, what you wear daily (is the watch going to be a daily watch?) all these and more play into my decision.

I would get a patek but not that particular model. If it is between those exact models I would go with the AP. Honestly you can't go wrong though these are two of the finest brands on earth.

This is a very tough decision. I am a huge AP lover as you can see on my signature and do own the AP in gold. Go with the Patek unless you already have one.

I love, love, love the AP, but the Patek is a decision you will never, ever regret. The Patek is not a watch - it is a statement, an experience, an heirloom, a.... a WIS's timepiece. Since you're asking us to choose, I'm guessing both are not an option. Buy the most exquisite example of horological artistry ever made; buy the Patek.

Depends on what "wearing habits" you're in, IMO. The Calatrava is an elegant, classy dress watch. If you do a lot of suit and tie action, it's perfect. The AP, while still very classy, is of a stlye that offers more flexibility. I think it can be worn in a wider variety of situations.
I have an AP ROO and a couple of PP's, so I like to rotate them around depending on what I'm wearing. If I had to choose between only having one, I'd go with the AP for versatility. My 2 c's.

I would hold off on either of those two and wait till I could step into a higher line of Patek--like a 5146 or even a higher AP -like a RG Dual time. As for those two models-neither work for me.

It's an unusual comparison. Why not look at a Patek Nautilus? It has the same designer as the RO. The 5711 comes in rose and yellow gold. I have the 5711/1a (steel) and just love it. The dial is amazing - pictures simply don't do it justice. Good luck.

I was never big fan of AP RO chronographs, just too bulky for my taste, but recently I tried exactly the same model like the one on your pic, and it`s probably best looking watch that I ever tried!
Anyway, although I`m hardcore Pathek admirer, and I find that model very beautiful, my vote goes for AP stunner!
