My experience with Panerai service.

So, I sent my 305 to service because it badly needed one. I live in EU and the closest Pam service was in Holland. After one week I got info what needed to be done with it, I ok’d everything and thought I get it back within 6-8 weeks. How silly of me. Yesterday I got an email that unfortunately thay can’t get all the parts in time and it will be delayed, wait for it... about 5 months! So I asked them what is the part that they can’t get and takes 5 months to receive. The reply was hands.... I wonder how is it possible that Panerai doesn’t have extra hand sets for 305, because they told me that hands get replaced always in service? I told them I wan’t the old hands put back because they are perfectly fine and I definetly won’t wait for 5 months...

That's weird, replacing the hands although they are fine!

From my limited understanding, replacing hands can be a bit tricky, these are the reasons I’ve heard

The hands might not be totally straight after being removed

The hands might not fit the pinion after being removed too

But older Rolex can be serviced without having to remove the hands,I wonder why it cannot be done with Panerai......

I was about to say that. If hands needed to be replaced at every service, the vintage market would just not be the same. That sounds like BS.

About 2 years? I just sent an email and asked if they are willing to put the old ones back. Also, I went to see a local Omega watchsmith and asked him about the Panerai situation, just to get another perspective. He said he has hard time believing that Panerai doesn’t have extra hand sets available if they change them every time. He believed that the reason for 5 months service is that summer is here, the workers have their 3-4 week vacations coming and for the next 3 months the service center works at minimum capacity. In August when everyone has had their vacations they start servicing at full capacity. His opinion was that they can’t say to customer that nobody is working, so they came up with ’Sorry, no hand sets!”.

Another great Panerai experience. And yet, some of the watches still appeal to me.

Definitely a weird one, but apparently putting the old ones back wasn’t a problem for them.

Breitling always changes the hands during the service.

most hands are press fit, so the elastic deformation is what keeps them in tension with the shaft. After a while this deformation becomes plastic (permanent) and there is no longer a spring like tension holding them on. Or if it is holding them, it wont be as tight as a "fresh seal." Hope that helps explain it better.
They would rather charge you for hands than have hands fall off if shocked.

On top of that, well, they are charging you for new hands, so why not? :)

the hands are very thin and will often get bent when being removed. So a replacement is usually expected during service. Something to keep in mind when sending in a T dial in for service.

The sapphire had two scratches and the bezel was damaged, so they both needed to be replaced. 1390€! Not cheap....

It is true that Panerai replaces all the hands during service. The reason I was given is that they are often damaged when they are removed. And they replace them to avoid any future problems. I recently had my 422 serviced.

They told me that hands are replaced to new ones at every service for ”free”, but in my 305 case it would’ve taken about 4 months to get new hands, so I told them to put the old ones back.

No not cheap! But considering a movement service overhaul is typically ~650€ I guess and add’l 740€ for new crystal and bezel isn’t unreasonable.

Thanks for the info! Calibrating my mind for future costs and expectations.

Ouch! But look at this way, you’re good for at least another 5 years.

Looks great. Service cost price is about what I would expect these days.
The important issue is the service center doesn’t leave a spec of dust on the face or scratch the case while it’s there. This is happening way to often with RSC.

The saleswoman at the Pam dealership told me that next service should be done within 7-10 years, but after 5 years I should check that it keeps time.
