Would you have left a note ?

After parking in a tight spot in a hire car, one of my passengers opened their door just as gust of wind took it, slamming the sharp edge into the neighbouring car.

No damage to my vehicle on the pointed door tip but it did leave a noticeable dent on the nearly new & perfect condition car next to it.

After assessing the damage and making the judgement it wasn’t superficial we decided leaving a note for the car owner was the right thing, as it would likely end up costing a few hundred euros to fix.

It would have been an option to walk away, but I’m pleased we left a note with contact details for the owner to follow up on should they wish.

It’s what I would have liked someone else to do for me & my car if the tables were reversed.

I would certainly hope anyone/everyone would leave a note. Integrity and all.

I've left a note before. Owner called me and said thanks. I offered to provide my insurance details and he waived it off.

What goes around comes around.

You did the right thing. I've done the same once but I broke the other car headlight. A friend that was with me still talk about that.

Good on you, and I doubt anyone is going to respond here saying they wouldn't have done the same.

Good job.

Although I probably would have towed the car to the body shop, have them fixed it and towed it back, before the owner came back.

Definitely the right thing to do. It happened to my company car while it was parked on the street. Someone got too close and took my mirror right off. They were nice enough to leave me a note.

Do we really need to even ask this question? I think any decent human being would leave a note and take responsibility. I pity the member who answers this question any other way.

If you were on the receiving end, you would want a note left behind. I applaud you for taking the high road on this matter. Best of luck

Well Done, Burlington!
I would also have walked around the car and slapped the passenger really hard. Complete lack of consideration for others. I have had numerous idiots do this to my cars. Noone ever left a note and I have even had it happen when I have been sitting in the car. They were surprised when I abused them.

We went to church on Sunday back in 1986 and I parked in the church parking lot in front of the rectory in a Pontiac TransAm that was a Dealer Demo. When mass was over my wife said someone hit the passenger door I expected to see a small crease in the door, it was literally caved in. Needless to say one of the church parishioners smashed it in and didn’t bother hanging around after damaging it nor did they leave a note. So my hat’s off to you for leaving a note.

Thanks all for the positive replies. They remind me very much of the famous quote - Integrity is doing the right thing even when no-one is watching.

I certainly hope to bring up my young boy with the same mindset.

That's kind of how I approach most things.

My office at work overlooks an area where you have to parallel park, and I witnessed a hit and run, when a woman was trying to fit her 18' car into a 17' spot. I waited, and waited, and she never came back to leave a note. So I found her car in another lot, verified the damage (she damaged her car and another) and reported her to HR.

There's just no excuse for that kind of behavior - worse yet when you do it to a coworker. Who, as it turned out, worked in the same department as the scofflaw.
