Am I the only one who doesn’t like the Royal Oak blue dial?

I called around to several boutiques to see about availability of an RO preorder a 15500 in the black dial. Quickest timeline I’ve heard is between 5-7 months for he black dial 15500. Anyways, I honestly had no idea the blue dial was so sought after until I started calling AP boutiques and the conversation would go something like: “Hello, I would like to preorder a 15500” and they would respond “you surely aren’t asking about a blue dial are you? Those aren’t possible to get and the list is years out” and I would say “no, black dial” and I would then hear the salesperson breathe a sigh of relief I didn’t want a blue. I had NO IDEA the blue dial was so sought after — I just don’t get it. My natural favorite is the 15500. Lack dial, it just looks quite classic whereas the blue seems so... nuevo riche. Not saying it isn’t gorgeous, it is, but it just doesn’t appeal to me like the black does. Has anyone else been living under a rock and not realized how popular the blue was?

Frankly, I find it a bit annoying that anyone I tell that I’m buying the 15500 black dial often will ask if it is because I can’t get the blue instead. The answer is always the same, that I prefer the black.

Same for me with the DSSD. I prefer the black over the JC blue...

I think part of the appeal of the blue dial is its exclusivity and difficulty to get compared to the other dial colors. I’ve seen a black and grey dial 15500 and both are stunning. I’m sure the blue is stunning as well. I think some may gravitate towards the blue because it’s the harder one to get.

I personally like the blue and my second choice would be the grey. Not liking the blue is just fine. Its your opinion and its the only one that matter when you choose your watch.

Congrats in advance!

I think its mainly the fact that a lot of AP owners also own rolexes, and the majority of popular rolex references already have a black dial so the blue offers a bit of uniqueness

The blue really shows more depth and is more versatile compared to other colours if you ask me. There is a reason why most men wear Blue shirts - it fits everything. But I don't like hypes.

For me the grey one does it better and the white is too white.

Yeah, blue has been hard to get, or at least sells at a premium on the secondary/grey market in any AP Royal Oak models for at least 10 years. It’s not a new phenomenon with the 15500.

Personally, I like all the Dial colors of the 15500, and would be happy to have any of them. I have a Black Dial 15400 that I’m quite happy with it, I would have gotten the blue if it was cheaper, but the black was priced better.

I love the Royal Oak blue.

You prefer the black.

That’s all good.

But we could have done without the new rich comment.

It's blue all the way for me.

The black and the grey look great, right up until you put the blue next to them. The blue dial just pops and makes the others look a little plain.

Blue is nouveau riche? I think the opposite as I think most start of with safe conservative colours like black or white and then branch out into blues and others as they want to expand their collection.

Personally, I like blue dial watches. That's why I have lots of them. Blue is also a favourite color of many people, hence the popularity of blue dial watches. Historically, the very first original Royal Oak 5402 also was released with a blue dial which goes to explain why blue dial ROs are considered more iconic and popular.

I personally think the 15500 has the best blue that AP has ever done.

The blue is really mesmerizing. All the dial colors are great and it comes down to your personal preference and patience. Congrats on getting a black dial soon!

Other than the rarity and hence better price retention of it, I too don't see the specialness of the blue. Other than black or white, blue and other hues come across to me as neither here nor there for something that I need to match with everything that I wear. Black looks smart and is my preference, all my watches are black. I would say the majority still prefer black just based on the number of pieces available. It's a circular logic, if the majority preferred blue, it could have been the reverse and black would be the rarity. But we all know they play with supply to their advantage, whether it's for overall revenue or brand power with "iconic" pieces.

Your not alone, I prefer grey or black but they are all nice colors. On gold I like blue or black. I do think the blue is way over-hyped though on the steal ROs.

I concur with you OP. I went to the AD for 26331ST and the AD was like “hey I have the very sought after blue dial in my safe”. I looked at it and I didn’t like it one bit. Black dial was cool but, the Panda was the one That stood out and the one I bought.

Blue dial 15400/15500 is overrated. Black dial is way cooler but personal preference.

*if we are talking blue, Nautilus is the winner!

I don’t qualify as noveau riche but I’m taking blue over black and grey on the 15500. I’ve owned black and grey on the 15400 as well. No losers but the king stay the king.

The 5711 Nautilus in blue is truly spectacular. For me, I have a white dial Vacheron Constantin Overseas chrono and a soon to be 15500 black dial. I think the AP blue stands out too much on their stainless RO offerings and I like the more conservative look of the black.

I do like the blue on the ROC, but that’s because the ROC is inherently more sporty than the regular RO. For a regular RO,I prefer black or gray. On an all rose gold RO, perhaps I’d consider blue.
