I am very envious of your handwriting Faith!

Here is a sample of mine, Diamine majestic blue ink and a Nakaya double broad stub flexi nib!

Thank you Joji! I have a suggestion to try. Go to your nearest Lamy store and get your self a Safari with an italic nib, either 1.1 or 1.5 and have a go with that.
The nib on a fountain pen is so important and this is the cheapest way to experiment!

With a good nib my handwriting improves, with a stiff fine nib it ends up looking like I am writing with a ball point

I really encourage folks who are starting out or who think their handwriting is not up to snuff to try a broad nib or one with a stub or italic. it makes a huge difference. Also, slow up when writing with a fountain pen. One of the beautiful things about writing with one is that it makes you think about the writing process. It is difficult at first, especially if you are used to writing non cursive and with a roller ball or ball point but it is worth the practice.

I have written with fountain pens since the age of seven. I used to think and try to write 3 paragraphs ahead of what was meant to be going on the paper. A fountain pen made me slow down and I saw an almost immediate improvement in my writing. My teacher made me use a broad nib as well for the reasons I gave above! Hope that helps!

Not a great pen enthusiast, but I must say those 2 examples of handwriting above are the finest I've seen in a long time. Really well formed, very even and very distinct!!

I'm no handwriting expert, but those 2 would be any teacher's or professor's dream to see that kind of writing whilst trying to correct an examination paper.

Shandy, since there are no Lamy dealer in my area I have been browsing the web for Lamy Safari however the nib selections seemed to be limited to M, F, XF and B only.
Any further advise? (thanks in advance)

Hi Joji.
I would recommend this pen retailer in a heartbeat, Swisher.
Here is a a link to the site you need. Click on the Lamy button and find the safaris, click on the pens and you will get to the page you want! Use the drop down menu's to select the colour of pen and the nib. I have the 1.5 italic which may be a little too broad for everyday writing so I would suggest the 1.1 opition. The nibs are only $11 a peice so if you want to go broader you won't be breaking the bank!

Here is the link!

Oh yes, one last thing, make sure you order the converter as well so that you can use bottled ink!

Shandy, thanks again for the info.
I've just placed an order for Lamy Safari with 1.1 option (and coverter) from Swisher.

Well done you! I can't wait to see what you think of it and how you like writing with it. What sort of ink do you have?

Shandy, so for I have been using FP with ink ctg. only.
Experimenting with bottled ink will be the next step once I get comfortable with 1.1 nib.
I noticed the mentioning of Noodler's in few posts - will this be the choice?

That is an excellent ink though I do find it quite free flowing! You might want to pick up a bottle of Private reserve if you can find them in your area, Watermans or Parker quink are good inks too and more widely availible. What sort of colour are you looking for?

Here is Private reserves and noodlers site's to give you an idea of the wide range of colours!

What a lost art!!

As a professor, I will NOT accept any assignment handwritten for ease of grading and (unfortunately) the lack of penmanship of most, if not all of my freshmen college students. Sad to say.

As far as my handwriting; I did one year medical school and it shows!!

Wow... nice penmanship!

I'm an all upper and lower caps person myself--- it s the only way I can write for people to read. If you were to look at my personal notes, you would think I was writing in anther language!

I am working on my penmanship. I have been in the habit of printing everything so I have to unlearn that.

My writing sucks as well.

Here is a sample written with a 49 cents Bic, on a free memo pad and a pic taken with a camera phone in horrible office light.

Chip,

Your handwriting is quite legible and does not suck. I reserve the term "suck"
for illegible writing or scrawl. Yours is just fine. Faith

Chip, I think your handwriting is excellent, especially that your writing with a ball point. I would love to see your handwriting with a fountain pen, it would look supurbe.
