Thus far my favorite is blue-black and here's why . . . Documentation often is carried out using black ink. Blue-black is passable and holds more interest than an everyday black. But given the full range of colors available, I would have to experiment to see what other colors I really liked.

Which brand/brands ??

Seems that Waterman's Blue-Black is one of the nicest.

Can't go wrong with blue/black from Waterman, Pelikan or Montblanc.

I just picked up what I think is one of the best blue/blacks out there,Diamine Majestic blue. Terrific shading and dark enough blue to be used for more formal purposes.

It has become my favorite ink and that is saying a lot as I have avoided blue for so many years as that was all I could use in School!

Here is a sample, Double Broad custom flex stub nib on my Nakaya, custom done by John Mottishaw.

My Favorite Brown is Noodlers standard brown, rich in colour, nice and dark but with lot's of shading.

This sample is done with my 1927 medium stub flex Parker Duofold special.

Late to this thread (as always) but that is a lovely blue, Shandy! Heard great things about Diamine Ink. Apparently Visconti and Noodlers Manhattan Blue are also great blue inks. Have you tried these?

So far my favourite (just like Kai) is Montblanc Racing Green. I stocked up on 4 bottles since it's been discontinued.

Richard, that blue brings back memories, it is very similar to the school ink that I used as a boy (yes I am old enough that my school provided in to those of us with fountain pens!)

I wish I could answer your question, but have a lack of knowledge of the various ink colors and brands. I just got my very first FP a few weeks ago (Lamy), and at the suggestion of the salesperson, ordered the Lamy cartridges along with it. I have a very fine point and it writes very scratchy so I either use my MB RB or my Pelikan PB which uses a Parker gel refill.

Faith, I would really recommend going back to the folks who sold you the Lamy and have them fit a medium nib and try that, you might find it less scratchy.
Alternatively you might want to try the brown paper bag trick which works really well. Use a piece of brown paper (the sort you put mushrooms in in the supermarket) and do figure of eights on it with the nib, also do the edges of the nib as well, it should improve things. When doing this keep the ink in the pen and every couple of goes on the brown paper try writing on your normal paper.
hope that helps!

I have two favorites at the moment:
1. Montblanc Violet. It really flows well and reminds me of red wine. It looks a lighter colour on some strokes and reminds me of the translucent colour of red wine when the glass is nearly empty.
2. Noodlers Blue/Black. A very dark almost black ink but a very dark navy that also flows so well and has a lot of class.

I have a blue Lamy Safari with broad nib.Writes great !!Using MB Black in it at the moment. Not quite as good as Sheaffer Prelude m nib or Sheaffer Targa 1020 Imperial Brass, but for the price on the Lamy, its actually quite good !! I got the Lamy converter, with the pen.

the sailor blue black reminds me of my father's writings back in the day, so I use that.

My favorite so far has been Noodler's Turquoise Eel ink. Not just a great color, but it improves the feel of the nib on paper too.
