To SKX or not

Hey guys,

Looking for a 0 f’s given watch to pair with my Yachtmaster for heavy daily usage. Is the Skx007 a good option? And for those seiko enthusiasts, pepsi or all black?

Thanks!

I have gone for the black. Both are great value beasties. The blue is SKX009 i think.

If you like the style, go for it. Difficult to get anything "better" in that price range.

I went for the Pepsi.

Have both SKX007J and SKX009J.
Bought years ago along with Seiko super jubilee and oyster style bracelets.
Great value for what you get.
Use them a lot for vacation watches and beach days.

I don't enjoy wearing that level of Seiko diver. For a beater that's still fun to wear, Oris might be better. Or perhaps a pre-loved TAG

can't go wrong with Seiko divers, I prefer slightly more vintage 7002s

Don't waste brain cells deciding which bezel, just go buy the whole rainbow and swap in whichever your mood suits. OE or aftermarket, there's tons of customisation available.

I prefer bezels all 1 colour though. Don't see purpose of Pepsi or other multicolour dial, these things aren't GMT aren't they - am I missing something

I have the 007 (black dial/bezel) on bracelet and for $150 it’s hard to go wrong. The watch keeps good time, is comfy and easy to wear. I wore mine in the ocean and pool for 2 weeks on vacation and it’s still going strong. The only real problem I have with the watch is the power reserve isn’t great at all. Seems to run out within 24 hours. That’s a small complaint tho for a watch that offers what it does at the price point.

You might want to look into the seiko turtle as well. It's basically the new and improved SKX.

I'd say the hands are the only thing that really shows the price of this watch, especially on the 007, they are not beautiful.

But overall, for this amount of money they are very hard to beat and I enjoy wearing them.

Might not be fully wound. I'm finding mine (got a pair on rotation, both do same) don't fully wind on the wrist or I don't wear it long enough during my day, plus I'm a sedentary panda.

Can't crown wind so whenever taking off I do the "Seiko shake", once fully wound they'll go on ticking at least 2 night plus a day unworn.

IMHO Seiko auto winders aren't as efficient as RWC's. But still heaps better than that Seiko Kinetic... gotta get that one whirring like a helicopter before it accumulates any charge.

The quality is unmatched for the price, I agree with you on that

My point was that a "daily diver" or "beater" only serves its purpose if it gets wrist time. For me skx007 didn't get much wrist time -- for rough activities, I ended up wearing no watch. But it would definitely stand up to virtually any situation the OP could throw at it, and I remain a fan of the Seiko brand

I prefer the Turtle for case style and size. Also a better movement that can be wound. About $50.00 difference on Amazon.

Have to go w/ 1William on this one. Both the SKX and Turtles are a huge values but the Turtles win on hand winding, hacking, and overall design. I have and enjoy both, they make great platforms for modding as well. Really can't go wrong with either so enjoy the hunt!

I have a 007 and it is fantastic. I've worn Seiko divers for years and they are wonderful.

While the Turtle does have an advantage in movements, it is also wears much larger and for people with smaller wrists it isn’t always a great fit. The SKX while 42mm wears smaller due to the short lug length

Can I fit the movement of a turtle into the SKX case? also will the dial feet and hands fit?

Might consider a swap if this fits.

for my wrist, the SKX definitely fits better. The turtle still has short lugs so it's wearable on my 6.5" wrist, but definitely pushing the limits.

I love my two SKX, but both are modified. I also had a stock 007 I loved, but it stopped running, so I sold it (rather than fix it).

I've heard to you can swap in a 4R36 into an SKX, but might require some modification and a new stem. I haven't looked too much into it

I'm not 100% sure because Seiko has such a huge range, and a lot of the products are for the Japan domestic market. SKX007 is not being produced anymore, but there are still a lot of new-in-box pieces floating around.

The Grand Seiko divers are their top end, then Prospex, and then the Seiko 5 Sports divers.

If I had to place it in the current offerings, the SKX007 felt like Seiko 5 or entry-level Prospex. On that note, Prospex is a great lineup. It has fun watches like the Turtles, and it also has watches (like the Marinemaster and Spring Drive models) that few people would call beaters.

It's definitely entry level, close to Seiko 5.

I have both the SKX007 and SRP581. Love them both. I prefer the SRP581. I've always had a Seiko Monster of some kind or other. It's just a little different.

Bas, have you been to the Philippines? It's Seiko diver heaven. Nowhere else have I seen so many people wearing Seiko divers. Especially on the wrists of older Filipinos, you can see a lot of cool vintage models

Bas,

Not sure about the movement swap since the chapter rings and crystals are different sizes. I think the dial will fit but not sure about the dial feet, they might be in a slightly different positions. I do know the hands are interchangeable.

Never been but it sounds good and it's obviously nature/beaches paradise.
My two Seiko divers are probably my most worn pieces, I love them to bits. Swapping nato straps, sometimes rough leather.

Hmm, oh well the 7s26 has been keeping good time and not hacking or winding with the crown are the only downsides. They are very robust. I've serviced quite a few of them, cool little tickers.

I have the yellow one, SKXA35 I think, it's a winner and a lot of cheap fun. It's a regular in the rotation.
Everyone needs an SKX.
