For the best non-custom shoes, Church's used to be the best I ever saw in stores. Once I found a model built around a specific last, I never found anything else that compared. The Bookbinder finished leather makes an excellent dress shoe.

Considering the John Lobb William vs William II.

Either the William in Black Buffalo with Rubber Sole vs William II in Black Calf and doubleleather sole.

Have you ever checked out Leather Soul's custom offerings from Lobb or Edward Green? Very nice stuff and only a 12-18 month wait from the time of order.

I atually do check the Leather Soul and Leffot website from time to time as well as some other websites which offer the more basic offerings. In this instance the basic factory offering meets if not exceeds my desires.

I've actually been contemplating getting a pair of John Lobbs or Edward Greens for awhile now. I was originally contemplating a pair of Edward Green Galways or the John Lobb Williams line as my first venture in a more expensive shoe. However I already have a number of decent boots but no monks, so the double monks win. I considered the Edward Green Westminsters, however my basic research indicates that their typicall last is narrower than the John Lobb. I tend to do better in a wider Last and besides I really like the Williams II.

I hope to have them sometime next week.

I am the opposite of you it the fitment department. I need a narrower last for my very odd feet. Fortunately, I think I found it in the Crockett and Jones 341 last.

I remember you saying that the joy of your first pair of Crockett & Jones feeds the fires of a new addiction and I think it will ring true for me as I am already looking at a pair of Crawfords.

The wife and I might be doing a fall trip to NYC so I am going to try and hold off until then so I can spend some time trying everything on at the C&J store.

BTW: seems like you have been on a shoe binge lately, no??

That's not a bad idea, trying on all of the different Lasts on personally. Based on what I've seen you could do a lot worse than sticking with Crockett & Jones.

I actually started with some Allen Edmonds, and then as I got a few of those I purchased some Aldens. Along the way I started noticing how much of a difference this really started to make. Since then I've gotten a few Crockett and Jones, and I probably would have been happy with another Crockett and Jones offering last time. However they didn't have the type of shoe I was looking for at the time. So it came down to either a Carmina or Alden. The Carmina offering had a Dainite sole so I figured I would give Carmina a try. I'm happy I did as it was a bit different but it was still a real good shoe. In fact I would say it's closer to a Crocket and Jones level of shoe.

Somewhere in all of this I decided I would one day get an offering from John Lobb and possibly something from Edward Green.

Anyway I'm having fun. I know I enjoy filling out my wardrobe and at the same time wearing some of the better quality shoes that are availible. Once you figure out what's out there, where to go, and which sites are easier to work with, then it's just a matter of determing which styles you like best, and what Lasts work for you.

Great choice Anders, should you go there. C&J monks are the other ones I initially considered.

Alfred Sargent has the Ramsey and these are supposed to be pretty nice as well.

Not sure where to get Crockett and Jones in LA.

There are a couple of places on the internet.

I would first have a gander at the Crocket and Jones website to see what is possible first. That is what all styles exist.

Brooks Brothers also sell Crockett and Jones under the Peal & Co, however not all Peal & Co are Crockett and Jones.

I just did a phone order from the Crockett & Jones store in New York. The sales guy I dealt with was very knowledgeable about fit and was able to advise on sizing once I told him I was a 9D in Allen Edmonds Plaza.

Brooks Brothers would be a good start for nice English shoes that you try on in person and do not care if they are Sargent's or C&J made for Brooks Brothers. I have heard that Brooks Brothers may have their shoes at 20-25% off sometime in April (Easter Sale???).
