Omega vs Rolex - stay or go?

Hello all,

so I try to solve this puzzle for some time already. For 11 years I have PO 8500, which I bought when ended the university - So lot of sentiment.
The watch never had issues, went with me all over the world, great workhorse.

For last months I have BLNR and really love it. It is smaller than PO, subtle, to me it's more refined (maybe still honeymoon period) and wear much more comfortable.

Now I do not know if to sell PO (don't need that money that urgent, but would use them on a bike) or keep them and wear them later, when honeymoon period is over.

I do not want to make BLNR as "special watch" it is professional line, stainless steel, I want to wear them as they should be, and for "not sure" environments I have Garmin's.

Did this happened to you as well? Or did you sell, and then regret?

Don't sell. Too early and you are in the honeymoon period with the BLNR.
Give it 6 months or so, if after that you are still not reaching out for the Omega, then it may be good to move it.

Watches become important when they convey memories to you.
I would keep both.

My very personal take is that I don’t like any Omega so I would not keep it.

The Brand, its designs, marketing, nothing speaks to me.

With that said, you have two options.

Sell a watch you’ve used for a small amount of money, which in the grand scheme of things, won’t really change your life I assume (will a few k improve your life?)

On the other hand, you can keep the watch and it’s memories, and still sell it if after a while you notice it’s just taking dust in a drawer.

I’ve sold watches and there is none that I regret. Actually there is one that I wish I sold earlier because I found out that I simply hated it. Wearing it made me feel strange. On one hand I kinda liked that I was an expansive item, but it had many design cues that I now understand and dislike (many reminiscent of Omega!).

A bit like, imagine you drive a golf, then one day you step into your new Tesla, and you notice how much you hated all the plastic buttons and shift driving.

If you consider that the PO has completed its cycle for you and the proceeds from its sale would unlock things that would be more fun, then by all means sell it.
Otherwise, it's a GMT and a diver. A perfectly valid pair of watches to own.

Just once. I sold a Breitling Superocean Heritage which I miss for its sentimental value but I wasn't wearing it much. I regret it and I will not repeat my mistake.

I have no idea how this might inform you. It's your life, your watches and your choice.

Different enough watches to keep the Omega in my opinion.

You said "PO's." Do you have more than one? If not keep both. It's nice to have choices!!!

Keep the Omega. It's a great watch. You've got good history with it and if money isn't an issue then keep them both even if the PO ends up getting little wrist time.

Stay, you will regret it if you let it go.

The PO 8500 is part of your life and tied to significant personal events. If you sell it now, you might be fine for a while but there'll come a day you'll miss it and you will want to buy another back. The problem is it won't be the same as your own PO and you'll regret having sold it big time. Trust me on this one. Save up for your bike. You won't get much money out of the PO anyway, not worth selling considering its history and significance to you.

Alternatively, do you have a friend that might be interested in buying it from you? If so, you could come to an agreement to buy it back from him (or at least to be consulted) if he then decides to sell it?

I own the earlier PO2500 since 2005 and I will never sell it. It was my first significant watch. Too many memories and I still wear it these days.

IMHO, YMMV.

Keep it. Its trade in value is horrific and worth more to you. It’s also nice to have a watch you can wear for the activities that might beat up your Rolex. I sold my POC and it took a huge hit in resale value when trading it on. I bet you eventually sell it for a Submariner.

You have a great combo there, in my opinion every person should have a dive watch in the collection and that PO is a perfect example.

I would suggest that you buy a rubber strap for it, it will completely change the way it looks and feel on your wrist. Besides it has a sentimental value and you have created a nice history with it that maybe one day you can pass it to your kids.

I had a similar dilemma when I bought my Bluesy recently, initially I was going to sell my 12 year old Omega Seamaster to partially fund my Rolex purchase but decided to keep it and try and build a small watch collection. Also I don't think my daughter would forgive me as she sees them as her inheritance She already has my Seiko Tuna.
I must admit my Omega isn't getting much wrist time and sits in my safe but i would keep it as an inheritance piece or for a rainy day.

The Planet Ocean is a terrific watch. The dial is one of my favorites of all time. And the excellent 8500. You have history with your watch. There is room for both. I would not sell the PO.
Keep it. I'm sure you would wear it from time to time.

The PO is an amazing watch and you’ll regret it for sentimental reasons. It’s an excellent 2-watch collection.

I was in a similar situation with a Seamaster. I knew I didn't want to sell it, but I almost never wore it. Then it came to me: Put it on a strap!!!

Now I have a completely different perception of a watch I have owned for many years, and it really is fun to wear sometimes -- especially in situations where I prefer not to wear a more expensive-looking watch.

11 years is a long time. I’d keep both if unless I absolutely had to sell them.

I would wait until the honeymoon phase is over. Even then, you will not get a lot for the watch. I might get an Omega Rubber Strap and change it up a bit.

Keep both. You won’t get life changing money for the PO anyway

Agreed with most prior comments. I would only sell the Omega if there is a truly compelling reason to do so.

Omega vs Rolex - stay or go?

I had the PO 22015100 that I sold last year to a TRF member to fund the purchase of my 116710BLNR from another TRFer and haven’t regretted it one second. The PO also had some sentimental value for me but the BLNR has become my new workhorse and I haven’t looked back. In fact, just last night while coaching my son’s T-ball team the BLNR took a direct hit from an aluminum bat (son swung early before my hand could clear the tee). Thank goodness I was wearing a long sleeved shirt and the watch was tucked underneath the sleeve because I heard a loud “ping” when the bat made contact. I held my breath while pulling back my sleeve to check on it, and sure enough…it was fine. Batman survived Shohei Ohtani! No damage…no regrets.
