First PP incoming - 5230G-014 Hong Kong Dial

I was looking for a world time watch for me and my 18 months old daughter. My plan is to follow the cities on the dial to travel around the world with my daughter and this watch. I am going to wear the watch occasionally and pass it to my daughter when she grows up.

Talking about heritage for passing on precious timepiece to the next generation, it’s a no-brainer to go for Patek Phillipe (Kudos to their Marketing team!). I did browse other brands, VC and JLC World Time are close but the final decision is PP.

Hence I spent few months to study which PP world time should I pick. I know cloisonné enamel models are the grails for all PP enthusiasts, it’s really a masterpiece but I don’t have PP AD connection to place an order and out of budget for grey’s price. Next, 5930 has extra chronograph function and the dial is beautiful, but 13mm is gonna be too thick for my daughter’s wrist (unless if we keep feeding her with junk food). So my target is down to 5110 / 5130 / 5230.

Luckily World Time series is not as popular as other PP models so I don’t need to wait for too long nor pay for premium to grey.

So here is the manufacturing year and diameter of this series:

5110 - Year 2000 37mm
5130 - Year 2006 39.5mm
5230 - Year 2016 38.5mm

- Picture from Monochrome -

5110 is too small for me, so the choice is between 5130 or 5230.

The hour hand on 5130 is very special and the dial is neat. On the other hand, I also like the hand-guilloche pattern on 5230, it reminds me the pocket watch from my grandpa. I won’t be regret to get either of them.

So I went to seek for advice from a friend who owns 40+ PP. He asked me 2 questions:
Q1) Do you want a brand new or pre-owned?
Q2) Do you want to put your name on the certificate?

Q1 is easy, brand new.
Q2, hm... didn’t think of this point before, it’s for my daughter in the future, will be more meaningful to see my name instead of previous owner’s name on the certificate.

Brand new for both models are at similar price but 5130 in the market are all named. So my friend recommended to go for 5230 quick, he said the existing dial of GMT+8 time zone with Hong Kong has already changed to Beijing since 2019:

- Picture from Patek Phillipe -

5230 2016-2018 Hong Kong
5230 2019 onward Beijing

He joined the PP annual party few months ago with all other VIP, the PP representatives mentioned it’s worth to collect the world time with Hong Kong dial. From their experience, more story behind makes the watch higher value to keep.

I was borned and raised in Hong Kong, it’s another strong reason to get the old dial with more story to tell my daughter when she grows up. Not gonna talk politics here but I do understand why Patek Phillipe changed the GMT +8 city to Beijing...

My friend called few ADs for me, most are Beijing dial already... Fortunately, got a Hong Kong dial version that can put my name!

Thanks for reading my first PP incoming story, here are few pictures of the 5230:

Awesome dial! Great watch. Congratulations

If I may ask , why has Patek decided to change it to Beijing instead of Hong Kong?

Thanks!

China consumer buying power is very strong, seeing Beijing on the dial makes the timepiece collectors in China feeling more proud to own.

Also, China always claim “One China policy”, where Hong Kong is just a city and part of China... So in their mind, Beijing is the capital and politically correct to represent the timezone.

I heard other brands are going to change to Beijing in 1-2 years after PP, let’s wait and see.
