Omega watch for a graduation gift ?

For the past 12 years I've enjoyed wearing an Rolex OP 36MM and had intended to buy my son the same model watch for his college graduation gift. However my local Rolex dealer (s) tell me they have no OP 36 or Explorer 36 and that it could be year (s) before they do have one to sell me.
So, I am now considering to buy either an Omega Aqua Terra or Speedmaster.
I've not yet been to a store to see any Omega watches, but plan to do so within the next day or two. For my son's graduation gift which Omega model do you think he might most enjoy?

If your son is in Engineering, speedmaster is the way to play this even if Rolex were available. The new speedmaster is beautiful, packs a ton of history behind it, and given how true it is to the original design is something that will never go out of style. A great choice for anyone really. The sea master is also great, just depends on whether you think he’d prefer a diver.

The other consideration, if you do want Rolex, is to check some of the listings in the classified section, here, or other respected secondary dealers. One thing I do like Rolex for is that the case back is blank, meaning you could engrave it with a special message for your son.

Whichever you choose, your son will be thrilled. Congrats to you both!

The new 3861 speedy sapphire is nice as is the seamaster 300 diver.

Maybe check grey prices for the Rolex - getting close to mrsp.

Omega-wise - Then I would probably go for a Speedmaster 3861 or maybe the 57-model in green or blue or make it a little more “young”

Omega would be a great choice and readily available. The Aqua Terra has an automatic movement and many of the Speedmasters are manual wind, if that matters. It would to me especially if it were my only watch.

Because this will be a gift, I think the AD experience should be a must for your son. Maybe he can pick it out at the Omega AD.

I would say don’t compromise, go grey and get what you intended. Nothing like your first Rolex.

Another vote for the Speedmaster. Such an iconic reference with rich history. It will never go out of style and is a must have for any watch enthusiast

Just a thought … but if you planned on getting your son the same OP as yours, maybe consider gifting him yours now. You may enjoy the Speedy or Seamaster

Thanks all for the helpful replies. Yesterday I did visit an Omega AD but was a little disappointed that the bracelets were so long, which made getting a sense for the weight and "look on the wrist" a bit challenging. My wrist size is 7" and the Omega Speedmaster and Aqua Terra that I tried on had bracelets which I guess were standard-full-length and, or sized for about an 8" wrist.
Other than that it was fun for me to see the different models and learn about the Omega brand.

Today I spent some time looking at the "post a pic of the Omega you are wearing today" thread and was impressed with the appearance that aftermarket straps can provide.

I’m biased but I’ll say Speedmaster. I was given one for my graduation by my father and it’s what got me into watches. It means a lot to me and I still have it 20+ years later!

+3 for the AT. It is a fantastic everyday watch with a great movement. Also worth bearing in mind that Rolex doesn’t always have a great ‘rep’ with the younger crowd…

Last week I tried on the Aqua Terra and the 3861 Moonwatch models. My current plan is to today or tomorrow visit a different AD and look at the Omega dive watches as well. Also , instead of only metal bracelets I would like to try on some Omega leather strap watches. Here is a photo of my watch which I've enjoyed wearing just about everyday for the past 12 years.

For my next visit to an AD I wanted to have a look at and try on the model Speedmaster 38 , which has an automatic movement.

I used to wear my old Speedmaster every single day but it has been taken over by my wife. Early last year I picked up the 3861 hesalite which I wear almost every day, but I have more watches now. Both are on their original metal bracelets as I find them to be quite comfortable.

Why don't you buy him the same reference (116000) but with the blue dial. Then you will have something really special... it's the same watch you have, but just a little different. And both are fantastic, perfect everyday watches.



Crown & Caliber has one for sale for 7.5k, you might be able to negotiate it down by about 500 bucks or so.
