Is this a good example of a red sub?

Hi Y'all,

Want to buy my first Rolex- and I've come across this Red sub for a good price:

It was sold once by Hodinkee as per seller, but seller also attached own pics: https://shop.hodinkee.com/products/1...nt=19138535620

Before I pull the trigger, I just wanted to make sure to get this forum's input to make sure everything is Kosher. I know vintage Rolex can be a minefield, and this will be my only watch purchase for a long time- and this is also one of my first vintage purchases

Also how do I protect myself from being scammed? The poster is on another famous watchforum, and has sold watches there. He is willing to take Paypal- is that enough safety for me?

The asking price is around $13k

Thank you!

Edit: The watch's serial is 3063xxx

I think $13k is at the higher end of the price range for this condition. The bracelet, while not terrible, could definitely use a tightening of you plan on wearing it often. That isn't cheap.

If you use paypal, do not do a friends and family payment. There is no protection. You must pay their fees to be protected.

Case looks pretty thick.
Still has the old 702 crown.
Nicely faded MK3 fat font insert.
The bracelet is obviously newer 93150.
The only thing concerning is there are no pictures of the serial or the case back stampings.

If you're going to pull the trigger, do it via a credit card through PayPal. This way you are double protected.

Thanks!
The seller sent me pics of the serial-I think that part is ok. Will ask about caseback stampings

Pricewise, is it really that high? Hqmilton etc seem to be selling what seem examples with dials that are bubbling for 16-17k. But I'm very new to this so I'd love any advice

I looked into buying this very watch a year or so ago. If it's the same one that was listed on Hodinkee, it's a beautiful watch. I'm no expert in the vintage space, but to me, it's a beautiful red sub.

This is my watch. The previous owner had purchased it from Hodinkee, then had it serviced, and then sold to me. It looks exactly as it does in the Hodinkee ad, https://shop.hodinkee.com/products/1...nt=19138535620

I have been shopping for one and following the online sales pretty closely. Compared to what is currently for sale now I think 13k is a fair price. I have seen a few really nice unpolished ft first 1680's go for $17K-$19k from dealers (no box or papers).

Thanks mate. Didn't mean to doubt you in anyway-but as this will be my first Rolex, I wanted to do my due Diligence

I totally understand; I've done the same. It's always good to get different opinions.

Looks like a nice watch, and the price seems fair nowadays for the condition. As for the bracelet, if it does need tightening, Michael Young in Hong Kong can take care of it, and it's not that expensive at all, based on the work done and relative to the price of a red Sub. Last time I sent a 93150 bracelet there to be tightened, I was at about $140 all in. (Just don't let them polish the bracelet.)

That's actually a really great price. I'll have to check him out. Thanks for the tip!

I'm really sorry but I find it staggering that anyone could pay this kind of money and not see the watch in the flesh first.
Having said that, it does look very nice and I hope it meets your expectations when you receive it.

I think the price is right in line since the one at HQMilton which was a service case, service dial, service hands, etc just sold for $10 grand the other day

I don't see any reason not to pull the trigger, the price is very fair IMO.

I don't think you'll find one nicer than that in that price range

its a fair price for a mkiv - mkv can be found slightly cheaper but the bezel alone makes up for it - the case is a little 'soft focus' looking but the shoulders are still good.
in that condition you will not be afraid to wear it and use it which is worth more than getting a mint one
