I have never seen one of those before. That thing is totally cool. I can't believe how intricate it is.

I would for sure...I wish Rolex would decorate their rotors a little bit. I understand they are tool watches but it would be nice, especially in the precious metal watches to get an upgraded rotor even if the watchmaker is the only one to see it. Would be a nice touch

If it didn't add anything to the thickness, as happens sadly on some Omegas, then yes, it's their most advanced comp and if it was with a display-back I imagine it would be decorated and finished a little nicer than normal.

Rolex movements are intended to be silent, unseen workhorses, toiling away while the rest of the watch get the attention.

One poster put it well - a feature in search of a benefit.

No. Not a fan of the clear case back period. For me, the big difference is feel...the metal finish of the Rolex feels like satin vs. the clear feels sticky. YMMV.

It depends on the beauty of the movement. In the case of Rolex, no.

It's neat to see; but I'll stick to OEM spec for mine. Nice pictures though!

As others have said, putting a clear back on a watch not designed for it has limited appeal. If the Sky-D came with a clear back, then I imagine Rolex would make an effort to have the guts of the watch be decorated or interesting looking. But a watch that isn't designed to be seen from the back usually has limited appeal being seen from the back. IMO.

Not appropriate IMO. The caseback must be comfortable with no writing or engravings of any kind, but made of solid 904 steel. For me it's all it needs.

I have them on every watch I could get one for and enjoy them immensely.

Yes.

I have one on my Pepsi and my Oysterquartz.

I have them OEM on my Pam 231 and others.

Why not be able to see the movement?

Roex did make a GMT with a clear case back.

Chaps

Rolex mechanisms may be tough and trustworthy but they look dull as ditchwater.

Best to stay with the metal back, it has stood the test of time when all is said and done.

Regards

Second, I despise clear case backs. Omega loves the display back and I just don't get it. Many add a couple millimeters to the thickness of the watch. And when you're wearing the watch you can't see it anyway! You have to take the watch off for the pleasure of watching the rotor spin around. WTF?? After you admire the movement's design and intricacies for 5 seconds, then what? I just feel it's a feature in search of a benefit.
Amen to that!

While I have this to look at whenever, I find my self not doing so. I don't see a problem having one if the owner wants one. I prefer to see finely polished and finished works reserved for the clear case backs.

The 4130 is a better looking movement. The SD has more interesting functions but you can't see them.

For a nicely decorated movement like JLC, GO, etc yes. I don't find the Rolex movement in that category. In fact I am surprised that some of the Tudors have clear casebacks. Not much remarkable to see there.
