Need advice: Rolex Explorer 1016
Hi everybody,
this is my first post here in this forum. To quickly introduce myself, I finished my PhD two years ago and now work in a Biotech company. Over the last 15 years, I alway wore a Festina Quarz watch, but now I am looking for an automatic watch. It should be versatile and should fit to a suit, but also to less formal clothes. A watch that I can wear every day. Initially, I was looking for an Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra (blue dial, 2500 movement), but changed my opinion and started now to look for the Rolex Explorer 1 series. I was thinking about either the 114270 (cheaper, easier to obtain, better movement, better glass) or the 1016 (looks better in my opinion, classic model). Today, I visited a jeweler close-by who currently has a 1016 available. The model is from 1985/86. Unfortunately, no papers are available. The dial is original, but the hands were changed and are a little bit brighter than the dial. Is this something that will blend in over time, or will it stay like this? The shop is asking for 5900 Euro (around 6400 USD). Is the price ok, or is it too expensive regarding the missing papers and the changed hands? I would appreciate your help a lot! Please find below some pictures. |

The hands appear luminova (Any direct shots in better light would help) and won't blend to match the lume on the dial. You could always get the watch and try and source a set of hands down the road but you're going to pay a premium and may not get an exact match. Case seems to be ok. Certainly had a couple polishes. The bracelet is ok but has the wrong end links which is why there is poor fitment. Price is ok but certainly does reflect the lack of B&P and the other small issues. Im sure others while chime in soon.

The lugs look all wrong to me. Over polished, too thin and wrong shaping.

I'd pass on this one. Too many things would irk me every time I looked at it (subtle things, but issues nonetheless). Truthfully I'd opt for a 114270 with box and papers for about $1400 USD less than this dodgy 1016 is selling for. Sure it's not vintage, but the 114270 is a killer watch.

Case is fine, it's the dial I'd be worried about. Looks refinished based on the pictures provided.

Hi everybody, thanks again for all your help! I decided to go for an 114270 instead (Z series from 2006). I bought it from a private seller, hopefully everything is fine with the watch, but I will have it checked next week. Attached below are a few pics. Thanks again!

I think you will really end up getting a lot of use out of your new 114270. I purchased mine around 4 years ago and honestly it gets more wrist time than my other two watches.
Im not a small fellow but even so I love the size. Looks great and super comfortable as well. I also believe it tends to stand out because most folks are wearing chunkier watches currently. |

Since this is a thread about the 1016 I thought it would be nice if there was an actual 1016 in it. The current Explorer is a great watch, but it's very dressy with its glistening white gold dial. For the ultimate Rolex tool watch, there is the matte dial 1016 and not much else. |

I've been wanting a 1016 for a while but i'm not sure if this one is fake? Price seems too good to be true:

Bummer, it's also 34mm instead of 36mm which is the size I prefer.

Is it normal for the springbars to be sticking out like this?:

Purchase advice
Hi all,
Have been keeping an eye on this forum for the last 12 months after getting sucked into the Rolex world. I thought 1 would be enough but here I am on the brink of buying another! Today I went to see an R Series 1016 from 1989, the last in the 1016 production run. I'm looking for a clean example so i've been holding off until I see something that fits with what i'm looking for. It's a bit expensive and their are much cheaper available from the 70's but anything in pristine condition seems to command a higher price. I'm no expert so if there is anyone that can give their opinion on what they see it would be much appreciated! Sorry I only took only these 2 pics. The plastic is slightly marked but was told that is would polish out easily? Thanks in advance |
