So what makes YOU pull the trigger?

Alright so I'm looking forward to the next addition to my tiny collection. Specifically a blue YM. The only issue I have at the moment is that most of the dough is tied up in one way or another. Now, I can always charge it but would rather not. That said, I've reached a point where I want to make sure I have something special for each of my girls. The day I'm gone, or a major event in their life occurs, I don't want them to receive furniture, old shirts, or a little money..... No I want them to each have something I wore regularly that I cherished...... So anyway I'm thinking about all of this because numerous passings, illnesses, and major life events all around me have really made me look at my own mortality and assess who/what are important.... Thats where I'm at..... do I save and save, or charge, pay, and be certain they are both taken care of in this regards? Either way the same thing is hopefully achieve just one sooner that the other.......but then there's the biggest issue. We aren't guaranteed tomorrow.....ugh..... So enough wandering/rambling, what runs through your minds when you decide to buy a new piece? Something like my story? Is it a simple reward for yourself? Do you just love to buy things?? What? Maybe it gets a bit personal but I honestly wander it every time I see an "Incoming" thread........

What type of interest do you benefit from on your cards? Any 0% offers you may take advantage of?

If so, buy it. Don't think about and just do it.

Seriously, you said it yourself, life is short. Worst case scenario is you drop dead and they can sell the watch to pay for your funeral expenses if need be.

Hope to see the incoming thread soon.

Never bought new, but I'm driven by price and a good deal. I'm of the thought that don't be dollar foolish but also remember that life is short. If the watch is what you want find ways to remove other expenses elsewhere to pay for it. That said as cool as they are, they are just watches. Do what you feel will make YOU happy

I made sure every financial concern concerning my family was totally taken of as well as my retirement and my business doing very well

At that point when I had discretionary funds available and could afford it and had the desire I bought

My concerns for my family is to leave them financially solvent not so much to leave them some of the stuff I used to have. Can't feed your kids with sentiment nor would I use it as an excuse to buy myself a watch

But just my humble two cents and you did ask

After I paid off the mortgage, I kept on moving the equivalent monthly amount into a slush fund. Soon I had enough for the watch I wanted, and it was pretty painless.

I generally buy pre-owned and aim to pay a price that I feel that I will be able to resell without any cost other than maintenance, insurance, and opportunity cost. Rationalizes it for me and it has worked thus far. I am very comfortable financially but have been quite controlled with watches in the past. This forum is perhaps not the best to continue that trend of self-control. I typically buy a watch every 2-3 years and have bought two since joining TRF in December. I love it.

I think of a watch as a personal luxury. Definitely would only buy one if I had super free cash.

Id say teach your kids through example that saving is your first priority and it will become there's. It's not a lesson I was the best example of but I try to teach my daughter to learn from my coming late to the party.

I bought my first Rolex a few weeks ago after saving for a few years. Ive got no credit card bills, no car payments, paid off the kids college. My mortgage is affordable and good equity in the house.

My Rolex is my reward.

My two cents. Good luck and best wishes.

Checklist for me:

Are all the essentials taken care of?
Is all the cash available now to pay for the entire purchase price?
Do I want this specific watch more than any other for the price?
Is the price really attractive?

If all 4 answers to the quesions are yes, then I buy.

I get what you're saying. I've thought the same when adding pieces. Then again, I only buy when I can pay in full, otherwise I can't afford it IMO.

My uncle has my 3rd great grandfathers pocket watch. I have my other 3rd great grand fathers sharpening stone. I cherish it just the same.

I crave the thrill of the chase. That is the emotion behind my purchases more than anything else.

If all my bills are taken care of and my savings is growing, I buy. I cannot own property currently so the whole house thing doesn't fit into my equation but if I was in Canada maybe it would be different.

80% of the time I buy used and the others are new (obviously discontinued models have to be used).

Additionally if I can put it on my Amex, I will buy it. If I have to use a CC I do not buy at any cost.

So.....I should've given a little more info I guess..... my only fixed expenses are a van lease (astronomical but its a damn nice van), my wife's student loan (that her mother is promising to pay off..(?)), and daycare for 2..... other than that is all malleable...... and I own my home. That said, I've been doing a little thinking and actually want to get a couple of things in order before I completely pull the trigger. Need a new Will, up the life insurance, pre-pay certain expenses........and actually my favorite local AD has a "lay away" plan of sorts... Actually, they just collect whatever money you bring in for however long you want and order your piece when you're ready.... this way I'm essentially saving for it.... but instead of sitting in the safe its going straight towards the goal. Oh and it keeps me from doing what I so commonly do......spending it on the wife...... So anyway, great post folks, keep them coming...... What goes through your mind when buying? Not just financial, but "life" concerns, etc??????

As long as you have your financial house in order, then go for it. Like others have stated - I always look for a deal, which means I have to be patient. Which also means that I look constantly and can usually judge if I'm getting a good deal or not.

Nothing screams cheap/wanna-be/poser to me like someone wearing a luxury watch while complaining about bills/credit card debt, etc. You CANNOT have those problems and wear a luxury watch if you don't want to look like a total idiot, in my opinion!

Agree, make sure your responsibilities are taken care of first and only use disposable play money for this expensive hobby. And always best to buy for yourself and if your kids love it because it was yours and you wore it then that's a great bonus. Rather I would go shopping with them together, enjoy a special day and a nice dinner afterwards, and buy them something they really wanted which they can also treasure once you are gone. Ofc if this is a watch then you are golden but I wager rather unlikely.

I wait for the right deal to come along on a watch I really want to add to my collection. My kids don't want any part of my collection so I don't buy for them. I'm retired and have all my financials in order so if I see something I really like, I go for it. In the past year I have purchased 3 new pieces, but there have been other years where I haven't bought anything. I don't buy to resell. I buy to keep for me.

When there's no reasonable doubt that a certain watch is perfect for me and meets all my standards. Add the right financial moment and voila.

Thusfar, both of my small people seem to dig watches. My oldest can name just about every model, and my youngest has already called my exp ii. So the consensus here seems to be all about if the bills are paid and you have the funds then you get it, but I guess the point has been missed somewhat. Besides the money part, WHY do you get it? If I only leave one material possession to each of my kids, a watch is it. So it goes beyond me just wanting it. There's a deeper meaning. How say you? Besides the money aspect.

Being a financial advisor, Im really enjoying this thread. You'd probably be a bit surprised but Im in the middle somewhere. Over the years ive had numerous millionaire clients who saved and saved and were so scared to buy expensive stuff (trips, watches, nice cars, jewelery for the wife, etc). Then they either got sick and couldnt enjoy the fruits of their labors or died. THEN, I see the kids (in their 40s, like me) get the money and proceed to burn through it like there is no tomorrow. We each have to find what makes us happy......

I enjoy champagne...but after drinking a $100 bottle of champagne, that money is literally pissed away.
I enjoy my Mercedes S class...that car depreciates like hell and I'm burning money to have it and drive it.
I enjoy Rolexes...when I buy a Rolex I haven't spent the money...I merely move some cash on my balance sheet lower down on my assets column...because the watch is just slightly less liquid than pure cash. (OK maybe I lose some value because I bought them new at AD...but not that much) You haven't really spent that money when you buy a Rolex...unless of course the watch gets lost, stolen, severely damaged, etc.

Really?

If the decision is to buy a new watch or provide for your family, it should be an easy decision. A Rolex is a luxury item, and generally one should make sure that all the basics are taken care of ahead of buying a new watch. I worked for nearly 25 years before I felt I was comfortable enough to spend big bucks on a timepiece. I am confident that you will make the best decision for your family. And just to add, my next piece would be YM, blue dial, love it.
