My review of the classic 16710 GMT Master II

Cheers Rolex Forum!

I was here last time when JJ Irani was still around. Always loved the funny guy. We knew eachother from the Watch Talk Forums. I only recently found out that he has passed away years ago. That made me sad. RIP JJ. :(

Anyway... here is my review of classic Pepsi GMT. Hope you like it.

Very nice review

i was away from TRF many years and came back to forum couple years back. Still remember JJ and Charles who were very active in forum during the early days of TRF.

And currently TRF is the site I must visit Everyday. Love this forum

Yeah JJ and his TT Blue Sub.

Then he had that two-tone Yacht-Master. At least 5 new photos every day. Haha.

I love my 16710 from 2000 and wear it daily. My only complaint is that the lume on the hands is shot so I'm going to have the hands replaced.

Great review. Thank you. Love mine on a jubilee bracelet for a bit more vintage vibe.

I have not thought of JJ for a while.

But don't worry...we've got a member who loves posting the same (or very similar) poorly taken shots of the same bloody late model watch nearly everyday.

Not sure why you would like the bracelet. At that price point, it is a flimsy piece of junk does not serve its purpose well, nor is it 'silky smooth'. Just because it says Rolex does not mean it's good.

"Personally, I like the old Rolex Oyster bracelets and while I admit they don’t “belong” to an expensive watch, they serve their purpose well and are extremely comfortable to wear. They also have certain silky, smooth feeling that none of the “homage” watches have managed to capture."...

Yeah, definitely. A lot of guys have their 1675 on a Jubilee.

I love the Oyster too much to even consider. But that's a taste thing of course.

@michael: As I said in the review, I love the old Oyster bracelet a lot. It's a classic in all its "Royal Flimsiness".

As quoted in the review...Do I think 16710 is worth the €6K price tag that the market seems to demand for them at the moment (even for the beat up T<25 tritium models)? Absolutely not. I purchased my watch preowned for $3500 back in 2008. They produced millions of these. So it’s not like they’re becoming the next “Red Sea-Dweller” or “Paul Newman Daytona” anytime soon.

The 2008 prices were very appealing.

I'd be all over one for 3500, I have a hard time justifying a 5 digit when they are near the same price as a used 116710.

I miss JJ.

We always made fun of him in the Watch Talk Forums. But in a friendly way of course. JJ was always "game" and playing along.

Excellent review.

Whilst many pilots probably don't use, wear or even own a GMT for their original design purpose anymore, being a long haul pilot myself, I keep the tradition alive and use mine on nearly all long haul flights I do.

It's a great watch, probably the best watch ever made, even to this day. It's just so useful for doing the job it was built for, telling the time, no matter which timezone you may be going to, or have just come from. No other watch I can think of does it so well with such beautiful simplicity and ease of use.

Thanks a lot guys. Much appreciated.

My blog is brand new... only a few days. If you want to comment the post in the blog too, it'd be great to have some action there. Haha.

PS: I thought I'd make a review of my 16610 Submariner but absolutely everything has been said about the watch already. I just added a section for it "watches from my collection".

Wow, $3500 in 2008! Unfortunately, that was about $3500 more than I had in 2008!

Thanks for the review, the picture looks great too.

Being new around here, I have seen many pictures of JJ in people's signatures, I could only assume he had left a lasting impression and sense of a big loss for those who knew him. May he RIP!

I too am a new member with a LB who posts regularly in the WRUW posts, thinking WRUW threads are meant to be used as 'seeing rolexes in action' type of a thread... hope I am not the offending member you speak of! if so, please share the etiquette rules and I will follow.

$3500 was the used price for them in 2008. I know because I wanted to buy one new and they were around $5k-$6k in 2007 ish (AD listed price.) I thought they were too expensive for a SS watch, so went with my LB for about $7200 if I remember correctly. Was looking at the used ones last year, and was told by many people to invest in one. At those price points, I could justify the additional cost of a new BLNR so went new instead.
