First, I'm not a fan of the overall design of the Sky Dweller. The features are amazing but I find the watch ugly.

Second, I despise clear case backs. Omega loves the display back and I just don't get it. Many add a couple millimeters to the thickness of the watch. And when you're wearing the watch you can't see it anyway! You have to take the watch off for the pleasure of watching the rotor spin around. WTF?? After you admire the movement's design and intricacies for 5 seconds, then what? I just feel it's a feature in search of a benefit.

I would. If I bought a Sky Dweller, I'd stick a Custom Watch Concepts clear back on it (assuming Mr. Preik makes one). It's not an especially pretty movement, but it's certainly more interesting than a plain steel caseback.

No. Not like it's an ALS where there's actually a beautiful hand finished movement to look at

The internals are works of art. It would be nice if it was an option. I enjoy the beauty of the mechanics, and enjoy looking at them function. To each his own.

I just don't think the movement is all that attractive.

Functionally it may be a brilliant movement but it is very plain looking

What function would it serve? Seems un-Rolex.

Watch forums are great, in that we can voice opinions. I totally disagree with just about everything you said. First, I think the Sky Dweller, is a really nice looking watch. The Fluted bezel, the sharp dials for legibility etc.

As for an exhibition case back, I think it would be a great idea on the Sky Dweller. My Omega Aqua Terra has one, and the movement is always available for me to take a look at. To me it shows craftsmanship with the way it is decorated. It shows the skill and knowledge needed to make these little marvels run so well. It seems like even some family and friends were intrigued by how a mechanical movement works after seeing it action.

If you just want to see a second hand move, and that be that, it is your prerogative. I enjoy all of my watches, and to me that includes checking out the "motor" as well.

I'm usually in the minority and my opinions tend toward the "stodgy." As I get older I get more crotchety. :) How long will it be until I start with the stories beginning with, "Ya know, back in my day..." You're right on the mark with the beauty of these forums. We can discuss, agree, disagree, and once in a while we can even change minds. I'm always happy to get a little edumacation on watches.

As cool as clear casebacks are...I still prefer the simple Rolex non engraved caseback and have them as thin as possible. I never stare at the movement past the first two weeks on any clear caseback watch I own.

Okay, now THAT is impressive!! I wouldn't mind seeing that. Hell, I'd take the watch off my wrist often just to see that.

Maybe it's my vintage roots but the movements are as interesting to me as the dial or any of the rest of it. I remove my watch at least twice a day to give my wrist a rub and invariable take a minute to watch that tiny miracle spin, tick and twirl. My little moment of Zen for the day.

I have them on every watch I could get one for and enjoy them immensely.

To the haters: DILLIGAF :)

Clear caseback for Rolex? Not for me. The rotor blocks so much and the movement is not really finished for display IMHO. There are some manual wind watches that I think are far more interesting with clear casebacks, such as the 1863 movement in the Omega Speedmaster Professional.

Aside from the movement being plain, aftermarket parts would also void the five year warranty. That's a problem.
