GMT IIc and wanting a SubC Date
Do any of you have both S/S GMTs and Subs?
They look so similar, yet I've been wanting to add a Sub to my collection. Does that make any sense? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

A sub is a GMT that's missing 'something'.

A GMT is an ugly Sub with that busy bezel and PCL. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

How about getting a SubC No date. That looks a bit less similar

I've been itching to get a sub even though I have a GMT.
However, I'd be going out of my way to make them different. My GMT is a BLNR, and the sub I've been eyeballing is a black two-tone. I'd wear the BLNR on a bracelet and the sub on a black croc strap, so in the end they'd look quite different. I would never own both a steel black GMT and a steel black sub. |

Buy and wear what you like. I went back and forth on the GMT or Sub. In the end I chose the watch that makes me love a Rolex. If I can add the GMT one day, I'd certainly do that and wouldn't feel it was a bit redundant.

Not when it's fitted with a sub bracelet.

I started with a no date Submariner and figured that if I wanted to expand my collection to add a GMT then the differences would be enough to warrant the purchase.
However after I recently tried on the BLNR I noticed a big difference between the way I looked at the GMT vs the Sub. With the Sub, when I first look at the watch I'm drawn to the dial of the watch and the perfection of the dial. When I tried on the GMT, my eye was immediately drawn to the busy bezel..maybe because the numbers are large or maybe because the blue color (which is gorgeous by the way). |

I sometimes contemplate this issue as well. I have a BLNR but I love looking at the sub. But they are a bit similar in appearance, and it makes me hesitate to purchase. Perhaps a 5 digit sub would suit me better (not sure though with all the upgrades on the 6 digit).
Today while walking the span of 2 blocks in Beverly Hills during lunch time, I spotted 5 submariners. It is very prevalent in my part of the world, and one of the reasons I chose the GMT is the fact that you don't see too many of them in the wild. Nevertheless, I still want a sub on many occasions despite its ubiquity. I probably won't pull the trigger on it, but it's nice to think about. The grass is always greener on the other side, and we are always more drawn in by the hunt than the acquisition. |

I like GMTIIc
I have both, GMT IIc got significantly more wrist time.
Maybe because I do a lot of travels across different time zones, being able to track multiple time zones is a very nice feature (I know one could always look at the phone but watch is easier). The bezel of GMT IIc is definitely busier than the subC date. However GMT IIc bezel is more functional/useful, at least to me. I rarely use subC date bezel. |

GMT IIc and wanting a SubC Date
Did you brush the PCL or literally put on a sub bracelet with glide-lock clasp? It's that bezel of the GMT tho - IMO I find it way to busy, wish they stuck with the smaller numbers of the 5 digit series. Now they just remind me of the writing on the side of Jeep Wrangler tires lol. I purchased the GMT first, sold it for a sub. Personally (and that's a me problem) I am true to the classic looks so the LN versions warrants them too similar to own both. I'm really not into the HUlK and BLNR. Maybe I'll add the 5 digit GMT (with bezel options) one day but for now I continue to do time differences in my head or just glimpse at my iPhone. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

I found a GMT II LN and a DSSD too redundant for me visually with the black dial and black bezel. A sub would be even more so unless you get different colors. A hulk would be fine IMO

I think they go well together but would want some variation in color. I wouldn't want the LN model in both.

IMO they are two completely different watches with different functions. I agree a bit of color to differentiate would be nice. I much prefer a GMT with a colored bezel to the LN

Interesting thoughts. Thanks guys! My GMT IIc is the all black model. Seems those with both GMTs and Subs vary the colours. I've never actually tried on a Hulk - though the pictures I've seen always look nice!

Ceramic isn't black. It's chrome. No like.

And how is this relevant to the OP?

Go for the Sub. Just got a no date myself and I agree with some of the other comments about the GMT being busy.

I have both after some contemplation and love the one two punch. The SubC is my everyday beater and goes fishing, surfing, beach, pool, etc. My BLNR is the suit, work, etc. watch.......just a touch dressier piece and tad more bling with the PCLS. Its a tremendous combination.
Just a side note, I had a Sub for 10 years and sold it two years ago. Purchased my BLNR this spring after trying it on and "had to have it", its an incredible time piece. I then brushed the PCLs on it I guess trying to make it a "sub look" like I had before. Ended up taking it back to the AD weeks later, they gave me a friendly scolding and then had the PCLs polished back to original. In the meantime I purchased a SubC date and have exactly what I want out of both. |
