First purchase, what discount?

Going to an authourized dealer to purchase a Submariner as my first Rolex. I am in Canada, what should I shoot for as far as discount off list price?

Any and all advice is appreciated, as this is my first foray into the watch world.

Little to none. Maybe tax?

Ask for 10% and you may get 5%. I don't know about taxes in Canada.

One approach is to say "If I buy it today and NOT shop around, can you work with me a little on the price?" If he asks what you have in mind, throw out 10%. If he says no, tell him you want to shop around and that you may come back.

This puts it on him to keep you from walking out the door. But be prepared to leave - you can come back the next day if you want to buy it anyway.

On a brand new SS Sub you might get 0-5%.

Fair enough. I just want to have as much knowledge as possible before walking in, so as to ensure I get a fair deal. I appreciate the replies.

It all depends on the AD as well. I know someone that recently bought a PP from a dealer he's never done business with and got 30% off.

Recently went to a few ADs in Los Angeles and all offered me 10% with no prior relationship. However, I went with DavidSW from this forum.

Depends on how busy the AD is. Here in NYC, discounts on ss sports models are just about impossible.

I'm not sure of the pricing structure on the subs but I can tell you I purchased a DSSD from a Toronto area AD at 15% off the MSRP (pre price increase). So I walked out paying 2% less than the MSRP (Ontario tax is 13%).

I think it depends on the AD... I had an offer from my usual AD (family does a lot of business with this store) for a trade and a new purchase...

I approached a local AD, told them the situation, and asked them for their BEST price... Did not disclose above offer... Was able to get %10 discount on a new Sea Dweller for cash or credit card...

They will discount based on how badly they want/need the business...

Buy from an online seller instead. If you want a new, unworn watch I think DavidSW has a few.

Build a relationship with the AD. TALK with them. Offer to purchase the watch you want at the discount that you want. You can get at least 10%. Maybe 15%. They won't give discounts to strangers.

I guess you will be going to an AD in Edmonton unless you have one in Whitecourt? The AD in Edmonton is difficult to negotiate a discount with.

If I were you, I would phone two of the three ADs in Calgary as well, that's (J Vair & Brinkhaus) as they can beat the Edmonton ADs discount and I guess it will be worth the trip.

Can send you a private message with the details.

Don't go with a US seller....the exchange rate and customs/duties don't make it feasible.

Depends on a lot of variables (relationship with the AD, supply and demand, etc).

five years ago, i was able to get a 20% discount on a 16610 from an AD here in toronto. not sure how likely that is to occur again, but it was pretty freakin sweet when it happened.

Based on your location, I second the suggestion to check the Calgary ADs. I was shopping last month and both of the ones bankerX suggested were very quick to offer 10% on the SS models I was looking at (sub, exp 1, exp 2). And it was the first time I'd set foot in them so I had no relationship.

To be honest since this would be your first purchase from them I would almost bet 0% chance. If you are a regular there and have bought multiple pieces from that particular AD then you may have some bargaining room, even though that is no guarantee. Best of luck and can't wait to see the pics

That's usually my angle (though I don't buy from ADs anymore). Solid practical advice. Shoot for 10%, hope for 5%, expect tax included as the final offer.

You actually paid 3.95% less than MSRP if you got a 15% discount.

The only cities that have AD in Alberta are Edmonton (1.5hrs each way) Calgary (4.5 hrs) or Lethbridge (7hrs). That said we do go through Calgary to see family on a fairly regular basis. Certainly don't mind making a trip out of it to save some $$$.

Ask if you can get it "tax in". We have HST here (15%), and I have been able to get this on both Rolex and Tudor pieces.

Good luck

Being in AB you're already ahead of the rest of the country by at least 5-10% (PST).

As far as discounts go, every market is different. Theres an AD in the GTA that offers 20% off to walk-in customers. Not sure this would apply to hot pieces like blue DSSD but certainly on SubC, GMTII, DJ and the rest of the standard collection. Problem is they have trouble keeping stock on the most popular items namely anything in SS. This place and their discounting is well known. In fact, all the other ADs know about it and they will try to sell you on the fact that they have it in stock so you wont have to order one and wait. Personally, Ive got time for a discount.

Thank you for the replies, I appreciate them.

Another thing I am struggling with, is I do prefer the older 14060M to the current model. I see I can find them in new, unworn condition various places online, however the anonymity of the internet and prevalence of counterfeits makes me nervous. I do not want a grey market watch either. I do browse the classifieds of this site from time to time, to see whats going through. What would be some other sites to keep an eye on?

Despite what others say here.....drumroll please..........expect nothing. :)

Most AD's, especially on lower costing, popular models like this will kindly say no thank you....been my experience at least. Good luck though!
