Your general perception of the offshore line?
Rolex Forums tells me I have been on a 4 year 2 month hiatus (!) but god knows how much longer it could have been had it not been for this gem of a purchase.
I've always been interested in AP as a brand and their legacy, and further research inevitably brought up the infamy of the Royal Oak Offshore as a celebrity watch, to be used as a mere party piece more than anything else. Personally the offshore line does have quite a number of over-the-top limited edition models, but the 'standard' 44mm designs (SS, CF, RG) seem to blend sportiness with elegance perfectly fine. I'd buy a 42mm but the arabic numerals on the chronographs just seemed too messy; the diver being an exception. It sounds very much like a horological spin-off of the Bentley Continental's appeal with the rich and famous, but the Bentley ain't a bad car at all. Does the ROO deserve such stick, especially when compared with the other classic models in the range, as well as other luxury sports watches? Otherwise you could give me a wake-up call and tell me this is just another case of post-purchase rationalisation aproo.jpg |

Great choice. This Offshore reference is my favourite 44mm ROO! The combo of ivory tapisserie dial and ceramic bezel is unbeatable. I also have a preference for the index markers, thus the 42mm Jarno Trulli appeals to me the most (the 44mm ROO is too large for my wrist). Congratulations.

The ROO is IMO the best sport watch out there (Excluding RM due to price point. Maybe someday LOL))and some models can even be worn with a suit like the 44mm RG ROO. In America we are living in a more casual dress environment and this piece is perfect. My only complaint is the fact that the 42mm versions do not offer ceramic or cermet bezels and pushers (Trulli being the exception). That is a great watch you have there so enjoy and wear in good health my friend.

ROO can seem grotesque to those with subtle tastes. I personally have nothing against it but I prefer the classic design of an RO and not the Offshore models.

this is also something that put me off the ROO but at the end of the day I like it and that is why I purchased it

I think they're great, particularly if you have a larger collection. I'd gravitate toward the RO line with fewer watches in the line-up.

Thanks for the kind comments! The ivory-ceramic contrast was what sold me the most I think. Also for those commenting about small wrists, mine's around 6.25", so it does look slightly awkward but not overpowering at all.
That's what I would have liked to think as well, but I felt that the squares of the classic models were a bit too small, which made the dial look messy. The flat dial of the ROC Leo Messi was another consideration, but availability was always an issue. More prominent guilloché patterns on the ROO would have been great imo. |

Don't know much about the ROO, but aesthetically the watch looks amazing. As you said, slightly large for your wrist, but think that's half the point of that watch--it's made to be seen. Congrats. It's beautiful.

To me, none of the current ceramic (bezel and/or buttons) 44mm or 42mm APs seem over the top or are too loud.
Well, perhaps the newest 42mm Diver chronos with bright green and orange may be a bit loud. But overall, the ROOs are quite restrained. They are large, but not overly so when looking at IWC, Omega Planet Oceans, Breitlings, etc. That SS 44 looks great! |

I don't like them at all, much too brash for my taste (you did ask!).

Personally , I think you made a great choice. I also thought that (in your words) "the 'standard' 44 mm designs (SS, CF, RG) seem to blend sportiness with elegance perfectly fine".
When it comes to other people taste in watches, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, if this 44 mm moves you that is all that matters. So enjoy your watch, because there is no need for post-purchase rationalisation.

Don't think so, many people get the 44's because of the ce bezels, if the 42's had them I think it would partly kill the 44 sales which are quite more expensive, I can't imagine AP doing that on purpose except'for maybe a limited edition, if they did the 44 RG in 42 as well as other 44's many people would be all over them, especially people who think 44 is too big, clearly the 44 RG in 42 would'have a huge success, might be wrong but we will see, in any case AP should bring interesting things as the FC and ceramic pieces as I understood are disconued, the divers are of course and I understand the 44's will be as well, will be cool to see what they will be replaced by...

I had a few offshores, incl the Trulli. The 42mm was still too big for me.
My focus is on the 15202 and the PP Nautilus now. I think those are better in balance. |

I prefer the combo of ROO for AP and a Nautilus for Patek.

Personally I prefer simple, clean watches. The ROO is to busy for me. Some chronos work i.e. the Speedmaster but for a RO, has to be a plain old RO. My 2 penneth as requested.
