Actually some E2’s

Letting them acclimate. Also just finished setting up my first humidor two days ago. Fun process. I did have a question for you vets out there, obviously I am sure it is not ideal to constantly open your humidor, I have the analog hygrometer that came with the humidor and I purchased a Xikar Puro Tempo that came highly recommended. Question is, is it common for the digital hygrometers to start going down at a steady rate when the humidor is open? My humidor stays at 70% constantly and when I open it, it will drop to 65% and 60%.

Great post brother. Just got into cigars myself. So many things to factor. Great group of guys here on TRF that are very willing to help and answer questions. The Undercrown Shade was a recommended to me and although I went out and picked up a stick, I haven’t had a chance to sit and enjoy it. It’s been a busy week so the goal is to finally enjoy it tomorrow. Looking forward to hearing about your experience

Yes especially when your house is air conditioned during hot summer months. Cuban cigars smoke much better at 65% humidity instead of 70%. Some guys even store at 62%. Draw and flavors are better.

I had assumed that 70% was the magic number in general. I didn’t know that’s some folks stored them below that. I just ordered quite a few 69% Boveda packs. I just noticed they have a 62% pack. Do people run different humidity levels in Summer and Winter? I live in Colorado. Just wondering so I can prep for winter soon.

Cuban cigars are a different animal compared to cigars from Dominican, Honduras and Nicaragua. There is more filler and it is rolled tighter, hence a more snug draw. Most who store at 70% find they burn poorly, draw harder and just don't taste as good as when stored at 64-65%. You can experiment with this yourself and draw your own conclusions. There is no exact science. I have stored at about 65% humidity and they burn and taste fine. Now here in the summer with high east coast humidity a perfectly stored cigar will actually absorb humidity when smoked outside which creates issues. So in my area the dry air in fall and winter make for the best smoking times.

Welcome to the club Larry! For a beginner, stick with the great producers, just like great wine. Also stick with mild to medium flavor profiles and you will be all set. Enjoy the ride.
