Q for Padi56 re Bonsai tree trims.

Hello Padi:

Since you are the guru of Bonsai, please advise when and how much to trim my little Bonsai. 2nd photo is a side view. I just received it as a gift. Unwrapped it and watered.

Thank you. Hope you are doing well.

Happy New Year! Sincerely, DM

I can’t offer any advice since I know absolutely nothing about this hobby, but I’m sure PADI will and I just wanted to say that is very very cool! I am sure it will turn out awesome

I had a bonsai fig tree for about ten years, but it grew too large despite my efforts. I’m interested in Padi’s response.

I like the idea of a Bonsai tree. Just looked at buying one, who knew a bonsai tree could be 18k?

Looking forward to Padi’s response!!

I was always worried a out the very specific watering needs of these.

As I understand it they can be killed very quickly with over or under-watering, no???

That has really scared me off as we leave our main home for up to three weeks at a time.

History on those is impressive. Imagine how they are passed down generationally. Incredible. I would think the less is more approach is best!

Looks like Portulacaria afra, or some call it Elephant bush tree which is normally what they call a in-door tree, depending where you live in the world. All my bonsai knowledge is mainly for out-door deciduous trees and evergreens like Junipers and Pines. So best have a look on the net expect there are lots of information about care of your new tree.Good luck in your new hobby had many of my trees over 60 years, remember the oldest living things on this planet earth are trees.

Yes its a great hobby a good tree to start is the Chinese Elm very hardy for out doors and easy to keep but not 100% frost hardy so needs indoor cool care when temperatures drop and might shed a few leaves.

DM and Padi, those are great looking trees, I wish I had the “Green Thumb” for a hobby like this. Hell, I think I would kill an artificial plant.

Thank you much appreciated.

Thanks Peter. Is there a book you’d recommend that would be a good reference and guide for someone getting into Bonsai?

Plenty of good advice on the net some good some bad but the most reliable information is normally from a proper Bonsai shops on line. Myself have made a few mistakes over my experience learning in Bonsai care over the past 50 plus years. But always learned from my mistakes, yes even the most experienced can loose trees, mother nature is great but sometimes can bite you in the ars# when least expected. But still a great hobby when you have something that you have created styled and looked after for decades and still alive. My grandsons who I started into the Bonsai hobby will look after my trees when I meet my maker.

Yes, that’s what I think is drawing me to them. It’s something that if taken care of will be with and my family for generations. That’s hard to say about many things these days.

I will check out proper bonsai shops and the net for advice.

Thank you again, I would love to see more pictures of your trees.

My goodness, that’s goals my friend. Those trees are incredible!!

Thank you for sharing them.

I’m going to set my expectations at having a bonsai that keeps its leaves for at least a month before I go too hard. But seriously, the devotion and love your trees have required over generations takes the words out of my mouth. Well done continuing their lives!! I wish you many more years as their caretaker!!
