You need a new bezel. That one is terribly faded.

That's because you have fallen victim to this "tropical" myth. Most people would call badly faded and blemished bezels and dials "defective".

It's brilliant marketing though. "You don't want a mint condition 1967 Corvette Stingray! You want one with dents and ripped seats! And you'll want to pay more for it!"

It's a well-known fact that a huge number of people like faded and worn things, and it's nothing to do with 'marketing' or mythology. Human nature seems to lean towards nostalgia, reminiscing, romanticism etc., hence the popularity of 'retro' and vintage.

Do you own even a single pair of jeans which have faded slightly, and happen to like them? Or a pair of well worn-in shoes, or a belt or wallet which has softened with time and use? Probably...

You should check out the antiques market - it's been quite popular, globally, for a very long time!

Ripped seats are clearly damaged. Patina and changes that take place during the aging process are highly desirable and cannot be purchased in a new watch, so this has nothing to do with marketing at all.

They now call it a "survivor" and people are paying up. People just want things the way that they were built by the manufacturer. Not someone 20-40 years later. And to think about where that watch has been and what it had been thru is kind of cool. But I partially agree, the prices are getting out of hand.
