Hi,

I'm inquiring about a 5514 that I came across that has the helium escape valve but it doesn't have Comex on the caseback nor on the dial. Dial looks solid and original though.

Did they make any of these with subs with the helium valve that weren't Comex? Or was the caseback replaced?

Tread carefully. It is common that logo dials got replaced but without it and without the original caseback I would not trust the case without provenance or being in the Comex log books. There are quite many fakes around and I do know of ”extra cases” which some claim to be Rolex but never were delivered to Comex.

So is it possible that there were some extra 5514 replacement pieces that weren't labeled Comex anywhere?

According to some people having them. They have no value in my world and I would say it is likely some, or all, are fake. A Comex without logo dial and caseback without provenance feels mostly like headache to me.

I think we need more info but 5514 without dial or caseback by Comex exist.

It would be a hard sell without any provenance. Maybe if you give it to Rolex for service, it would authenticate the HEV? Decommissioned watches usually have the back rubbed off. Is it my eyes, or do I see the remnant of huge “8” on the case back? Maybe just a reflection though. The dial matches the ones used for prototype 5513/5514 comex though. The insert is service obviously.

I expected a pre-comex dial, but without serial number it's harder.

Anyway, it cold be that during a Rolex Service you can get a verify about the provenance of the watch...
