The GMTIIC is more of a classic per se. The rotating bezel really is unnecessary (are you really tracking 3 time zones), both give relatively the same functionality. The GMTIIC is a little dressier, a little more white collar. PCLs are a minus for some. More subtle. Easier to dress up or down.

The Explorer II is more rugged, designed for easy legibility, has both a white and black dial option. More of an outdoorsy, blue collar feel. More casual. More unusual. Some people rave about the larger size, I don't think it should really play a factor. 39-42mm is the sweet spot for me. Slightly louder.

If none of those points regarding heritage really speak to you, just pick the one you like better.

There are some very nice older series pre-loved GMT Masters to be had on the forums. That would be my first target. If none sing to you, then the current ceramic-dial GMT. Sorry, just not a fan of the Explorer IIs.

I would love the new Explorer II if it wasn't for the orange on it. I like the 16570.

I say both. My solution to the same question was the older style Exp II Polar (16570) paired with the new GMT IIc. Absolutely love both. My polar Exp II gets more wrist time though.

gmt2c. Just saw the exp2 polar white, IMO case is too big, there seems to be too much space available inside

I don't care for any of the new models. Between a 16710 and a 16570 it is a tie IMO. GMT for its iconic look, Exp2 for it being more unusual and lowkey (just today I saw a pepsi and a YG GMT in the street). When I was choosing I went with an Exp2.

Love the GMTII rotating bezel. I don't track 3 time zones, but I do use it to time steaks on the grill! :D

If new I'd go with the Explorer II, if going old model I'd go with the GMT. Just my .02

I think it depends upon the other Rolexes you own.
If you have a Sub/Seadweller, I would go for the EXP II.
The 42mm EXPII is one of my favorites of the current Rolex models.

I have the GMTc, but if the Exp42 existed at the time it would have been a tough choice. Two of my favourite watches.

How do you intend to use it? I think the GMT can be dressed up a little more, and the Exp42 can take a little more abuse.
