I'm not a snob. Ask anybody. Well anybody important.

TOTALLY disagree, personally I owned a water sports business in the day and went through all sorts of relatively inexpensive so called "waterproof" watches. None of them lasted. So in 1983 I bought a brand new SD for a whopping $ 700.
Still own it, NEVER a problem, except needed to get a new bracelet (kept the original one, though).

I understand your point and it has some truth as relates to the world as a whole, but I'm less inclined to agree your assertion it applies to the community here. Most of us would probably recognize that a Rolex is a status symbol and many people by it for that reason, but I'd be surprised if that motive applied to the majority of the active TRF community. Let's face it, we are just way more into watches than the average status seeker.

Plus, the average status seeker only needs one Rolex while the average TRF'r always needs one more.

Status symbol? Sure.

Design, engineering, mechanical, heritage, quality? Yes.

What I find most appealing about a Rolex (or any mechanical watch in general) is that it's meant to last a lifetime. It feels like there's a "consumable or "disposable" quality present in almost everything one might spend money on these days, but not so with a high quality watch.

I find the idea that with a little care a watch might last beyond my own lifetime both heartening and comforting, and love being reminded of that fact when I look down at my wrist.

I loved watches for as long as remember. When I was about 19 I got a Gucci g watch, I thought I was the cats meow wearing a $1000 watch. Anyway as my professional life grew so did my taste in watches. I'm not saying I like rolexes just to show off cause that's not the case. I love and respect the brand from their heritage to the fact they give a shit ton of cash to charity. What's not to love!!

Also the ruggedness of Rolex tool watches coupled with their near mechanical perfection always awed me. I also like the idea of having a watch that can outlive me and which I can pass down.

I like the mechanical aspect, the engineering. It's incredible the detail involved in making a mechanical watch.
I'm wearing an engine or mini robot. Hearing it tick away feels like it has life, love it.

I agree with just about some of everyone's comments.

I think there is some truth to all of them for me.

I don't over-think it! The fact that it makes my heart go pitter patter, regardless of the reason, is enough for me!

I'm an engineer, so I really like/appreciate anything with great engineering. It's not an easy feat to engineer a device with so many gears and movements, in such a small package, that is very sturdy, and still beautiful and functional....oh and will last more than a lifetime. That's the main reason I got my Sub. I own several things because I love the engineering that went into them...and they do what they are designed to do extremely well. My '97 911 and Honda lawn mower come to mind.

I got into watches when I was 9. My uncle came over to the USA in 1994 from Russia and he brought with him two watches from Telstar. It has a 21 jewel Myiota Co. Movement. I was amazed at the movement from the display back all the gears moving and the balance wheel osilating made me happy. Since then I have had all mechanical watches. I have never worn a quartz watch in my life. Even the Seiko 5 I wore in high school was automatic. As I started working I could afford better watches, and after college when I got a real job my grandfather gave me a Cover M2 with a eta movement which I wore for a while until I purchased two vintage Omega's and had them restored. Than I bought my first Rolex a 15053 date. Its a great watch that I still have today. I have moved on to the DJ 16233 and had a Omega SMP which I sold due to ot not being worn often. I love watches especially mechanical ones because the depend on me to keep th going. Its almost like having a pet.

I was attracted to dive type watches when I was 8 years old and have been fascinated with watches and clocks since then. It's really my only material interest. We are a rare breed. Most don't understand and I don't expect them to. I often try and sort of hide my watch around certain people simply because I don't want to have to "explain myself". I wear it for me.
