Thoughts on 1675.

Hello,

After some years of collecting new watches, I started to look to vintage pieces.
I guess that after some point we get matured.
So that led me to the magnificent world of vintage Rolex.
I always had a soft spot for GMT, so what's more natural to look around for GMT 1675.
I would like to have your opinion about one I have found from 1963 (as the seller indicates).
Attached are some photos.
Thanks in advance.

Aris

Welcome to the forum!

For a 1963, I am sure you know the dial/hands/insert are later replacements. So made up of parts. Also take a close look at the movement.

Pictures are not the best so hard to comment on anything else. Check the reference numbers on the case. Case appears to be in very good condition, thus you may want check/scrutinize further..

The dial is out of range for the serial number/case back. The dial appears to be an original gilt dial, which is the last variation found on the gilt-dialed GMT 1675s.

What happens with these vintage GMTs from the gilt era is that many have had their dials replaced at some point during the past 50 years. You find them on ebay all the time.

What seems to happen quite often is someone buys one of these gilt GMTs which has had a dial change, whether it be a service dial or later white-lettered 1675 dial, and begins the hunt for a correct, original dial. I don't have to tell you that the gilt dials, especially the early ones, are very hard to find - let alone a nice one. That being the case, what you find are GMTs from the gilt era with incorrect dials and the most common gilt dial that you find in the wrong case are the ones which were the last variation of gilt dial which seems to be the case here.

If you're not a 100% purist, and having a watch "with a story" doesn't bother you, then this GMT might be for you.

One more thing regarding the bracelet. While it could possibly be original, the Swiss 6636 stretch bracelet normally came with 58 end links on the GMTs. 80 end links, as depicted in the photos here, were normally found on the Submariners.

Unlike gilt subs a PCG GMT with this dial is not necessarily incorrect. I have found in the wild two 1963 pcg with this dial and I know they were born that way. I think it is likely correct.

Great info Geoff. Possible but not probable.
