Explorer ii 2005

Hello, I am in the market for my first Rolex and have located one here in Texas that is an Explorer ii black face from 2005 that seems to me to be in good shape. The seller is offering it for $3,200. Is this a good deal for this watch from 2005? What questions should I ask about it before moving on it?

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks.

Whose the seller, how do you know its legit?
When was it serviced?
What does it come with?
You are better off buying on the board here.

He is a jeweler here in San Antonio. The watch has been serviced by him and the warranty he offers is 2 yrs.

Should it come with verification papers, or anything else?

I know these are juvenile questions but very much appreciate the help as this is going to be my first Rolex purchase.

Thanks again.

For a few hundred more dollars you can buy a more recent here on this site. I would strongly consider waiting and finding something newer in excellent condition. Unfortunately, without pictures, serial number for deteriming age and misc details there is not much more that others can help you with. The price sounds good, but what condition is the watch in, what comes with it? Boxes, hang tags?

Getting a good deal should not be your first consideration. Getting a real Rolex should. Buy the seller not the watch. Many dealers on this forum who have excellent reputations. You know that you get what you pay for.

I'd say go ahead and buy the watch from your jeweler.
Doubt your jeweler would have the guts to sell a fake or after market anything to ruin his reputation after years of being in business.

And you if put a Wanted To Buy ad get ready for a flood of garbage emails wanting to sell you one.

2005 may make it a F or Y serial, to me a pretty recent vintage. If its real, it seems like a decent deal. It would be great to have more info. You may want to ask if there is a 3 day return window so you can get it authenticated independently.

Like the previous posters said, trusted sellers here are often a good option, but I suspect the same watch will cost you several hundred dollars more. Also, you usually don't get to inspect the watch first when you buy over the 'net.

Unfortunately that watch sold before I could get to it. I might look for something from Z or later series.

Thanks.

Contact DavidSW, or one of the other trusted sellers, on the sales forum. They are a great source for Rolex and will save you hundreds.

If you don't mind paying a little extra, maybe consider a M or V series with the 3186 movement. I've seen a bunch of them in the mid to high $4K range.

Looks like I can get an excellent condition m or v with the new 3186 movement for about 4k or a brand new g series for 5k. I don't really want to spend the extra 1k if I don't have to--- thoughts in what I should do???

I would not worry too much about the series as long as it does have the 3186. And, for what it is worth the prior models with the 3185 were just fine as well. The only difference is a Rolex manufactured hairspring in the 3186 making it a completely in-house movement. Who cares??? Just us watch geeks. No one else.

A quick search in the "For Sale" forum shows several for sale.

$3,200 for a 2005 is an excellent deal. If it has been serviced in the past couple years, it becomes a super deal.
