The grail Panerai : PAM360

Let me introduce you ; imo THE PANERAI GRAIL

Panerai had 2 super grails, being the PAM21 which is the first limited edition ever made since Richemont bought Panerai in 1997. It was a Radiomir with only 2 hands. Platinum case and a vintage Rolex movement
The other grail is imo the 203. A 1950 case with the original Angulus 8 days.

These 2 are among the most collectible and most interesting modern Panerai watches ever made.

Between 2000 and 2011 they made a few other stunning pieces like the 127 which is the first 1950, the Radioimir 232 aka the poor mans 21 and the Radiomir 249 aka California dial.
These 3 were all limited editions and about 2000 pieces per reference were made.

In 2011 the gave us the 372, a watch which perfectly fits in the same list as the 127, 232 and 249

But in 2010 they did something VERY special. For once Panerai decided to make a very limited watch (300 pce) , a watch wich was kind of a collaboration between Panerai and some well know Paneristi super fans.
Rolexforums is the forum if you want to talk about Rolex, www.paneristi.com is the watchforum for Panerai watches.
Anyway, Panerai listened to the imput from Paneristi members and moderators and doing so they came up with what Paneristi's would call the ultimate Luminor base.
The result was the Panerai PAM360. A black DLC 44 Luminor with orange brown aged Luminova.
In other words, a watch which looked a lot like the über grail Panerai 5218-202A Pre Vendom Marina Militare PVD Base Model

So they listended to their most loyal clients and made this 360.
They wanted it to be very special and not mass production to keep it even more special. ONLY 300 PIECES were ever made
And they were impossible to get. I bought mine secondhand and paid WAY over list. But that was my only chance to ever get one.
The 21 will cost you 10 times it's original listprice, the 203 4 times it's original listprice and I am afraid the 360 is in the same situation. You'll have to pay almost 4 times it's listrpice if you want one.

'Nuts !' You say ?
Maybe but isn't everybody who pays thousands and thousands for one watch a bit crazy ?

Besides, highly sought after and collectible watches will always have crazy prices.

Also know that this PAM360 was sold out in a few minutes. Several thousands of Panerai lovers wanted this special piece and only 300 got one.

The rumour is that about the half of these 300 went to well known and lesser known Paneristi members. Some were picked out, others had a lot of luck and were picked out with a kind of a lotery.
You had to email Panerai Firenze if you wanted a PAM360 and they got several thousands of mails.
The other half went to Panerai VIP clients. Who knows, probably guys like Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwazenegger and the rest ( a lot of actors or even ex presidents like Bill Clinton or supe rmodels like Heidi Klum)

First of all, Big Congrats fo finally acquiring your Grail

And now a rhetorical question. How come a most loyal and most dedicated Panerai fan sells, this watch, the moment that thousand others Paneristi left out of this very vip group of 300 people?

On the panerai forum of this forum we have a similar remark

PAM 360 watches were already sold via several greymarket dealers.
Others were for sale via this forum, other forums and even a few were sold via Ebay or chrono24. That's life

I am happy they are for sale, otherwise I would never have one. I didn't like the price I had to pay but I had no other choice.

If a watch is so valuable there will always be people who choose for the money. Besides, I sold a 339 also with a premium. Why ? Because that made my 360 cheaper. Ans since I have a 292 I was not very interested in a 339.

So when somebody sells his 360 to fund his grail, I don't think he does something wrong.
If somebody wants an Egiziano and can't afford it but he was lucky to score a 360 at list , and now he can trade his 360 for an Egiziano, why wouldn't he ?

as mentioned in the other forum, huge congrats. looks great, and i'm mighty jealous.

nice write up, too....i think in terms of panerai "grails", you may or may not have nailed the post-'97 years, but, there are plenty of earlier grails out there, imo.

Never fully understood the hype behind the PAM360 to be quite honest, the fake patina is irritating, the movement a disappointment, and the DLC trite.

It may have some sort of sentimental meaning to people, but if it were released originally as a design from OP with full production then it still wouldn't be worth the money, in fact I doubt it would sell enough to remain in the collection for long. Panerai's prices are just as overblown as Rolex's if not more.

Now I can understand why it may mean something to you, but to me the price you paid for the 360 (and I know what they're going for these days) is ridiculous.

I apologize for raining on your parade, the watch probably means a lot to the Paneristi community but to me, as a realist, I just don't get it.

Anyway, those are just the thoughts of a self-proclaimed critic and you shouldn't heed them.

I'm pretty sure a normal production wouldn't be a problem, if they made 5000 of them. 1000 per year, they could easily sell 5000 pce

About the price, I can't agree !
Imo Panerai is a bargain these days. They still offer some very nice watches for 3K euro, Rolex asks the double !!!

Don't need to apologize I do understand your points but ofcourse not everybody can like the same watches
Critic is welcome !

I agree that the price I pais is ridiculous but imo that can be said about every vintage piece too. the price is driven by summply and demand. In this case demand was huge and supply very limited
