Birth year watch recommendation - 1970

I've owned a number of rolexes over the last 20 years - mostly modern SS subs, GMTs, and SDs. I'm looking for a birthday gift for myself based on my birth year (1970) - something different from what I have owned - maybe a root beer GMT - let me know what you think - I have no experience with vintage watches - thanks for the help

You were born in an excellent year for vintage rolex! I would have a 1680 red or a 1675 pepsi. The guys on the vintage forum will be able to assist even better

For change of pace a 1655 would be excellent.

Welcome to the Forum!

Depends on your budget.. Let's see 1970 Red sub, meters first $15K+ or a 1675 SS Mk-1 in very nice condition $8.5ish..

I guess Rootbeer $6k ish depending on condition..

Buy the best example you can afford. 1665, 5513 would be my choices

Or maybe an 1807 Bark day date, just to have something a little different, but clearly of that period.

The perfect birth year for vintage.

All of the above, and if your budget is limited, a nice Datejust would be a good way to go. Good luck!

I would go for a GMT 1675 as primary and second option for a RED Sub 1680 or 5513..

Red Sub. Love it either with top hat plexi or superdome.

Buy a perfect 5513 with an untouched case, nice dial etc. It's a timeless piece which is getting more and more rare to find in perfect condition. It beats a red sub any day in my eyes as you much more often see untouched nice red subs compared to perfect nodates.

Even if you have to overspend a bit for the right example this is the way to go. Don't buy a 80-90% watch. Search until you find the perfect one. Best of luck!

If budget isn't an issue you could go after early screw down Daytonas. And if you really want to treat yourself you go for a perfect panda PN. It will however cost you one or two dollars extra.

I am also born in the same year and have been thinking about getting a 5513. Agree with "roh123" that finding a perfect example with an untouched case and perfect patina on the hands and dial would be ideal.
