Two white 1680s with very different patina.

It’s interesting to see how differently tritium lume ages and patinas. My two white 1680s were likely made in a similar time frame. Both have 3.8M serial numbers.

Both Mk1 dials, but don't numbers suggest a Red dial? Nevertheless, two great watches.

If they are both indeed original dials, what would be the main causes for the difference in patina?

Cross-over time from about 3.8 million to 4.0 million range. I've read that there are even a couple of confirmed 4.1 million red Subs.

The one on the left would have been in storage and not exposed to as much sunlight.

The one on the right has been outside of storage longer and exposed to more sunlight.

I have a thread here somewhere that digs into this with examples.

Yes.

And, if you start wearing the “dark” one every day in the sun, it’ll lighten up nicely in a month or so. Mine did. My Tudors did as well.

I love them both. So if a darker one will lighten if you start wearing it outside regularly, does anyone know if lighter patina will darken at this point if it’s stuck in a drawer for a few years?

I think darkening takes a lot longer than lightening. Just my experience...

your 1680 on the left is very similar to mine from 1974. 385xxxx serial and kept in dark place for around 20 years or more.

So if I want attractive pumpkin patina, then I shouldn’t wear it outside much...how ironic haha
