Lots of people here love to say, "wear what you want" in response to these threads, but I find those responses unhelpful. Certainly we can do that, but that's not the point.
Tool watches (like most Rolexes are) always dress down a suit. But that's not always a negative. If you are just wearing the suit to the office, those are work clothes, and you might not be trying to look extra sharp. In these cases, a Sub, GMT, or Daytona works fine. However, if you are trying to dress up as much as possible in your suit, a dress watch does the trick. I think the reason so many people reject this reality is because they spend so much $ on their Rolex tool watch that they rationalize that it's a dress watch so they can feel good about wearing it more. I admit I have had the same feelings about my Sub and Explorer I, but that doesn't make it real.

Wear what you want, there is no rule that says you have to wear a watch on a leather strap when you get dressed up.
You can go down that route if you want but not for me, I will wear a watch that I can wear frequently otherwise it is money sitting doing nothing. My watches have to be able to multi-task, otherwise what's the point of having them.

If wearing a suit at work, then go Sub. If wearing a suit for a wedding, graduation or other personal occasion, then Daytona.

If wearing a suit on the way to scuba wear sub. If wearing suit on the way to track day wear Daytona.

Between those two choices I'd go with the Daytona. Obviously neither is ideal and because the bezels on both are ceramic and shiny, it's close of me. If it was an older Sub (pre-ceramic) it would be more obvious to go with the Daytona. Never the less, in this case I would still go with the Daytona because of the added shine of the dial/sub dials. Remember, shiny (fabrics/materials) is more formal than dull in general.

Brilliant post. ‘Wear what you want’ always amuses me, because like it or not, there are rules. Black tie - wear a Black tie. Not a red one. Tie it by hand. Wear a white shirt. Wear black shoes. Wear a dress watch. Yea you could ‘wear what you want’ and wear brown trainers. But you would look a fool. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

DJ/DD would be best for a suit imho. Or the new OP41 would be great too. Sky Dweller I think would be good as well.

of these two would vote Daytona but both are sports - you can get a gold calatrava for less than the Daytona! (and easier too!)

I love Rolex but it goes with almost anything BUT a suit. I don’t even like the datejust for wearing a suit.
There are so many inexpensive dress watches too. On those work days where you wear a polo shirt or just a sweater, then by all means rock the Rolex. |

The original question was which watch to wear with a suit? Since he only has the SUB or the Daytona to choose from, the answer is obvious. Wear a Rolex.

Either is fine, but I prefer the Sub. To me, every Rolex is just a little bit formal, even the tool watches. Since I was a kid in the 80s, I’ve seen guys wear Subs, DDs, DJs to formal events, weddings, work, hunt, fish, etc., so I don’t think traditional etiquette has applied in very long time.

Personally I wouldn’t wear any of my Rolex watches with a suit, however a blazer or sports jacket is ok.
With a suit, I’d prefer a dress watch on leather strap or a sports watch with a very slim profile like a 5711. |

Exactly. This is what I currently wear with a suit because it’s super thin, but honestly with covid I have not been wearing suits. If I were to start wearing suits regularly again I would totally go for a JLC. |

Which rolex would you rather with a suit??
I’d wear a Speedmaster Pro on a leather strap with a suit before I’d wear a Daytona.
Actually, I’d wear a Submariner with a suit before I’d wear a white dial Daytona too. If you really want to follow the “guidelines,” then a Cellini is the right answer since it’s on a leather strap. Also, I’ve seen guidelines on the internet that say a diver is ok with a suit but a chronograph is not. Personally, I think it’s ok to wear a black dial Sub, a Datejust, OP, Exp I, DayDate, or black dial Daytona with a suit. Is there really that much of a difference between a black dial sub, a black dial Datejust, or a black dial Daytona? Absolutely not. I wouldn’t wear a white dial Daytona or YM II with a suit. Finally, not sure how anyone can say that a Daytona is ok with a suit but a Submariner is not. That makes no sense. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
