If it’s an actual black tie affair (Tuxedo or very formal) the only Rolex that works is a Cellini.

If it’s a wedding or work? Wear what you want with the suit, no big deal.

I wore a suit last week - the first time since February.... I didn't change my daily watch (blue/steel Sky Dweller) and have to say it looked good with a suit. Probably better with a suit than my normal casual attire.

I also agree. The Exp 1 is still sporty but looks great with more formal dress. The Rolex with functional bezels are like very upmarket work boots, they don’t look quite right with more formal outfits, especially dinner jackets. An over tailored (too tight) suit with large sporty Rolex says mid level sales job to me. I realise that sounds snobbish but it is the truth.

Get a vintage Datejust on a leather band. That goes with a suit.

Sub and Daytona are sport watches, they don't go. People wear them, everyone can do whatever they want but nothing beats a classic Datejust 36mm on a nice leather band.

For black tie, as a traditionalist, a watch should not be worn. The argument is that it implies you care about the time, when you should focus on enjoying yourself. Having time to spend with your host is a luxury.

Not sure if watch fans would agree with this, but black tie is also minimalist and prescriptive, which is another reason to eschew anything excessive.

I’m glad this thread happened. I used to wear my rolexes with suits back when I got my first Rolex. At the time I was dealing with big old money and now I realize how silly I must have looked.

If we are going to follow old rules, then the rule for black tie is NO watch. It is considered rude to look at the time while at a black tie event. It seems that some people rationalize wearing dress watches to back tie events because they don’t many any other occasions for wearing dress watches.

I know somebody who wore bespoke and would sometimes wear a Timex. Had a Seiko diver too.

Just because somebody has expensive taste in clothing doesn’t mean he/she automatically has to purchase expensive watches too. That’s like claiming somebody dressed well can’t have a cheaper wallet. It’s nonsense, everybody isn’t just a mindless sheep who buys stuff because it’s expensive.

Wear whatever is in your collection. It’s 2020, most people don’t use GMT for trans-Atlantic flights or use divers for going anywhere near under water.

These are just antiquated old stuffy rules.

I personally don’t like a diver with a suit, although many do and nothing wrong with it. It’s strictly a matter of personal taste.

Seems to me some people here confuse wearing suits with black tie attire - OP never mentioned black or white tie.

I wear suits for work and I don't think twice about wearing watches on bracelets to go with them. That no-chronograph rule is just plain silly to me by the way.

OP, I think Daytona and Submariner are equally fine with a suit.

Tool watches (like most Rolexes are) always dress down a suit. But that's not always a negative. If you are just wearing the suit to the office, those are work clothes, and you might not be trying to look extra sharp. In these cases, a Sub, GMT, or Daytona works fine.

However, if you are trying to dress up as much as possible in your suit, a dress watch does the trick.

I think the reason so many people reject this reality is because they spend so much $ on their Rolex tool watch that they rationalize that it's a dress watch so they can feel good about wearing it more. I admit I have had the same feelings about my Sub and Explorer I, but that doesn't make it real.

To me, it has never been put to words better than this.

Me too. The original question posed a choice between Sub and Daytona.

Standards or customs in some parts of the world have changed so much that wearing anything but an Apple watch might seem eccentric in some circles. However I have learned that fashions are regional--for various reasons intrinsic to values or environments. Some places retain rules about decorum a lot longer than others--such as the City of London which is weird because innovators there led the world in breaking rules as far back as the 1960s. Some places have environments that are inhospitable to anything but bracelets--such as Singapore where humidity made early enthusiasts of Datographs suffered as posted on TZ.

Where I live only sales clerks wear suits. Bankers and attorneys have had to dress down because their rich and powerful clients wear t-shirts--admittedly some of those t-shirts were quite fine (such as the ones made for Steve Jobs by Issey Miyake).

In a boutique (Giorgio Armani Collezione for those keeping score), the immaculately turned out sales clerk commented on my Sub and raised his cuff to reveal his Daytona. At the time he was urging me to consider a very clever "micro weave" alpaca sweater (USD8200) because he did not have any hoodies. My everyday attire had become so casual that I had been looking for well made and subtle hoodies. That was two years before our Loro Piana store opened so choices were non-existent. Nowadays I wear Uniqlo.

I just remembered that last year I was coerced into attending a bash in Park Lane for which a "lounge suit" was inadequate. Anyway, I didn't have a lounge suit with me and had to rent a tuxedo. I refused to rent shoes because it seemed icky. Local friends took me around the shops on Regent and Bond streets. Finally, one of them declared that "Swinging London" would be fine with my wearing sneakers--but not my scruffy deck shoes (Visvim for those still keeping score). We found a pair in the glorious DSM at 18-22 Haymarket--huge compared to the one I was used to on Dempsey Road. At the gala, everyone was friendly and some even asked where I got my shoes (that's why I remember the address). I had forgotten that I was wearing my Sub and nobody noticed or cared.
