Renting a car in Portugal?

Hey, I'm looking for some insight. I'm going to Portugal, from the States, with the fam for a week in June. My internet research says insurance is included in the price of rental cars, but should we opt for extra insurance at the counter or when we book online?

Check your credit card benefits. With some, it includes additional coverage over and above what your own personal US policy may cover.

Check your car insurance to verify that your policy provides international coverage. Many do not cover you outside of North America.

If your policy or credit cards don’t provide coverage you may want to buy the extra coverage.

Double check to see if your credit card has primary coverage or secondary coverage. Just one more tip, always video your rental by walking all around it with your cell camera.

Great advice on the video. I don't expect any issues, but the thought of trying to get a US based credit card or insurer to deal with a claim in Portugal almost makes me think just adding the coverage at the counter makes the most sense. Has anyone used their credit card coverage overseas?

When hiring a car no matter what country doing it at the desk when picking up the car is a mistake. It’s an easy way for the car hire company to make extra on the rental,if you want peace of mind take out that extra insurance cover before you leave home for a fraction of the price

On the couple of times I’ve hired a car in Portugal I’ve found that the price has gone up a lot nearer the time, so might be worth booking sooner rather than later.
