To my mind, if they were going to change the original strap, they could at least lightly polish off the tarnish...

What's the basis of the value, other than rarity?

Rarity? It's the fact that it's a cloisonné dial, and to top it off on a rolex. These dials are extremely hard to make, taking up to 10-15 kiln firings. They're a form of artwork that goes back hundreds of years. Very few companies make these dials today, Patek being the most reputable and best maker of the dials. The coloring comes from crushed up pieces of glass and the lines are .1mm thick pieces of gold that form an outline on a gold plate, and are then heated to form one piece. While I guess it is "rarity" that gives this value, I think the term undermines the importance and talent the went into creating this piece. The rarity of this is because it's a Hand made one of a kind dial that can only be done by very few craftsmen in the world, even today.

At today prices and with what we saw at this Christie's auction, the only MilSub in the sale sold for $197,115, I guess you can now only have 5 MilSubs.
