An American buying in Canada

I’m headed to Toronto from the US for a day next week and was wondering if it made financial sense to buy there. I’m looking for a SubC and I know my chances are close to zero, but any advice would be appreciated on the off chance the stars align.

So a SubC is 8550CAD +13% HST= $9661.5CAD = $7285.2USD

$7285.2USD + 3.1% U.S. Import Duty = $7511USD

Am I missing anything? I’d basically save sales tax over buying local.

Thanks in advance!

The first part is correct. Not sure about the second.

You will not find a Sub available to a walk in at an AD in Toronto. You might get lucky in Cambridge/Waterloo, but otherwise all GTA ADs have waitlists for this piece.

if its cheaper (relatively) that ensures you wont find one at all. People figure it out. Same problem in the UK. I got a BLRO including a 20% VAT for <9k USD so imagine how cheap it would have been had i got a VAT return. In the US and including tax its 10k USD

If the Canadian retail pricing is less than US pricing in USD terms i probably wouldn't bother.

You won't find one at an AD, but a couple of resellers in toronto such as Watchfinder may have some. Ironically, I am also in Toronto this weekend

Welcome to the forum

With the current rate of exchange it makes sense, but it’s funding one that will be the problem.

I'll be in Toronto in two weeks hoping to wing by Royal De Versailles to see what they have in their inventory

Yes, Canadian prices are slightly lower, but once you factor in taxes, the price is very similar to the US. Of course that is refreshing to some degree, because it seems like a lot of things in Canada are more expensive than the US for no good reason. I bought my Tudor Black Bay in Montreal and saved a ton of money.

So i was in watchfinder today because they just reopen from their holiday break and boy do they have alot of new toys, i saw 2 hulks, 3 batmans, and some chnrs both tt and pm... also they had ceramic daytona black and white but those were sold already, but you never know sean is the manager/owner there he may be able to hook you up... and YES they had like over 4 or 5 subs date and ND but i think they were both 5 and 6 digits but yea...

in terms of sub i think all ad have none sooo you'd prob need to go to grey... happy huntings!

You’re correct it equates to us msrp pre tax. Be sure to have a CC that doesn’t charge foreign transaction fees. You’ll have to get lucky to be honest. Use to be a field day up there but those days are over.

I might be in Canada too. I’ve got a stack of CAD from last time I was at the casino.
