Explorer I 214270 is too big?
Hi guys.
I received a 2015 Rolex Explorer I 214270 which a relative of mine had sitting in a safe for 5 years. I really like the watch so far, it’s also my very first rolex. Im used to wearing small dress watches such as vintage Piaget Altipianos and my eyes are really not used to sportwatches in steel. In the last two days i’ve been bugged cause I see the 39mm case as MASSIVE! So i was looking around and I’m now considering whether trading it for a 36mm Explorer I from local jewelry. I attach photos of me wearing the watch. You think it fits oddly? Would a 36mm case fit better my wrist size (7inch smth) Thank you guys |

Looks perfectly fine. My wrist is 6.75" and no problem with mine. You're just used to small watches...give it a few days.

Looks fine to me, that's how a modern Rolex should fit. You'll get used to it and the 36 will start feeling small. But it's all personal preference.

Agree. I think it looks great. But nothing wrong with preferring a smaller watch. I’d try to give it a few weeks before passing judgement. See if it grows on you. I love the size of the 214270 on My 7.25” wrist.

The 39 was too big for me. At least it felt that way. Chris

Nice looking watch and it fits great on you. Like others said, you will get used to it.
Wear it in good health and don’t look back. |

This isn't a 'smaller Dress watch'. Looks great. Enjoy.

Think it looks great - I have a 6.75 wrist and am wearing a Tudor BB41 for now until I can afford the Explorer 39mm. Don’t change it for the 36mm - I think you will regret it and it is nice that it has come from within your family.

Explorer I 214270 is too big?
I will echo what others have said - you're just accustomed to smaller watches so it's perceived as big. It will not seem as big once you've gotten used it to.
It's not to say that you shouldn't trade for the 36mm, but I would recommend giving the 39mm a try for a while longer so you get a better feeling for it. If after that you're still interested, go try on the 36mm version. I debated the 36 vs 39 Explorer, mainly because I have small wrists. I picked the 39 and couldn't be happier. |

It looks fine and I'm sure if you posted a photo of your older dress watch everyone would say it is too small. Despite this, you should wear what YOU like and what makes YOU comfortable regardless of what anyone here says.

I would probably prefer a 39mm but actually have a 34mm 5500 Explorer.

It’s funny, I never experienced this period of thinking my 214270 was too big. Prior to getting it I had worn a 36mm watch for a decade. Before settling on the Explorer I tried on a 36mm OP and it looked absolutely tiny to me (I have 6.75” wrist).
I see the modern Explorer as a sports watch with versatility, which is exactly what I was looking for. If you want something with a heavy lean toward the dressier side of things, it may not be right for you.

My whole bugging was about the size 39mm might have been not proportionate on me, but you guys have really helped me out. Thanks I’ll give it a few weeks and see how I feel. |

Size looks good. I wear a 214270 as well on 6.75” wrist and really enjoy it.

I will admit, I do wish it was 1mm smaller. I think at 38mm it would be absolutely perfect. However with its thin profile I still find it to wear extraordinarily comfortable on the wrist. It is more pleasant to wear than my Sub, particularly during warmer weather.

I much prefer the 36mm original Explorer.

Looks good to me but I am sure the 36mm will also look good. Perhaps try out the 36mm size and see what you like better..

I think it looks great, but 36 would look okay too. I’d definitely stay at 40 and below.

I think it fits you perfectly.
Theres a reason 36mm watches are so much cheaper than 39/40mm watches, most people think they are too small. My wife even thinks a 36mm is too small for her wrist. |

I’ll be honest, I absolutely love my Explorer, but every once in a random while I do look at it and wish it was 1-2mm smaller.

Everyone has different taste but in my opinion if the lugs are as wide as your wrist its too big. If you can see some skin, you should be fine.

If anything you could go bigger. With 7" wrist you could probably rock an SD43. All personal taste though. I say give it time. If it turns out you like smaller references, that's perfectly fine, but it may grow on you.

I agree with you. For a time only watch it does wear too big. I had the 214270 and I wound up flipping it precisely because I felt it wore too big, even though I have a 7.5 inch wrist. It’s not so much the size. I have a 39mm OP and it feels great on my wrist. The problem with the 39mm Explorer is the flat bezel and huge numerals. They make the watch look too big.
Definitely get a 114270. Great watch and perfect proportions. |
