How to stop searching for the next Rolex

And just be happy with what you have

To be clear, I don't value watches over more important things. But from the hobby perspective it is getting mentally rigorous to "perfect the collection" - feels like a neverending pursuit and i'm not sure the destination is real. I guess the journey is supposed to be fun but i wind up regretting pieces I moved and then wanting them back again - and that's not really fun!

You will never have a perfect collection. If that was possible this obsession would not be fun. Buy, sell, lose money, make money, live, love, laugh.

Yeah, it's all a balance, being happy with what you have but at the same time excited about future references you might acquire. I'm not big on trading or selling though, once I acquire a piece. My philosophy is just be patient and add when it makes sense, don't rush into anything and end up regretting a purchase or trade.

OP I have the same itch. Recently got into the brand (6 months ago) and can’t get enough of it. I’ve acquired 4 in that time frame and find that I’m constantly searching for the next one. My challenge is that like many others I do want to start out with SS models before moving onto PM but they are hard to come by at retail.

I do the same with guitars. I buy the "holy grail" and then think my collection is "perfect". Then I find another hole in my collection. I'm hoping the same doesn't happen with watches. I have a Datejust and want a 118238 and then that's it. We'll see how that goes

This is great advice and feels like the optimal perspective (at least the one I’d like to have). I suspect something a lot of people struggle with (myself included) is the obsessive/compulsive urges that we sometimes have to “find the next one.” This was actually the inspiration for my sn if that wasn’t obvious heh.

I really like what 42itus said as well.

The hobby or obsession or whatever you want to call it is supposed to be fun. Sometimes we take things too far and/or to a dysfunctional level because if you’re anything like me, that’s just an innate part of my personality. But just try to recognize that when you can and try to find the discipline to adjust when you feel like you’re going too far.

I’m still pretty new to this, but that’s my 2cents. Try to enjoy the ride!

Yeah I can relate to this. I’m so OCD about it that I allow how a watch fits in my watch box to affect what I think about it. That’s not sustainable!

Must be hard to deal with this level of OCD. Glad I have no OCD at all

It's an ego trip that becomes the focus. A $10 watch and a $100,000 watch do exactly the same thing. Find a real passion and a watch should just come along for the ride.

For me, watches are a pleasant distraction. Life has a way of sorting out what is and is not important. At some point, something else will command my time and energy. My interest in watches will fade. I might circle back around in months or years, but maybe not.

For me it started with Harley's. Followed by knives, pens, guns. Watches were always a part of it but Rolex obsession began 3 years and 3 Rolex ago. I too hope this will pass.

Never sell any of your watches. One of my biggest regrets is selling my BLNR on oyster bracelet. No idea what I was thinking. I refuse to go Grey and pay twice as much as I paid in 2013.

Two things for me.

I found something I liked.

I stopped taking notice of the internets favouritism to certain models. It's an easy trap to fall Into on forums. Happens also in camera forum with lenses but at least their easier to measure. I bought countless lenses back in the day because I thought they'd be good. But really I should of stuck with the trusty 35mm asph 'lux.

Avid golfers will appreciate/relate to this

I am a low handicap golfer and for the past 2 years, in an effort to improve I went on a “quest” to get better by changing/improving my golf swing. First I started with a plan but then things got crazy, every time I would watch/read about a new golf tip I would get curious and try it. Eventually I got so tangled up in all the different things I was trying I completely lost my way. Had way too many thoughts in my head and no clear plan anymore and the desperation for the magic “quick fix” made me try everything in the hope for a miracle cure. It got to the point where I was so frustrated I started hating the sport I loved.

Eventually I found the solution.

Throw everything out, go back to simple bare bones basics. Find what worked in the beginning and forget everything else.

For the Rolex quest I recommend the same, cull the collection and go back to the simple bare bones Rolex that you fell in love with at the beginning. Forget all the new and fancy stuff. New and fancy is not always better.

Thirty years ago I was really into high-end audio, with pretty much the same result. Then I realized the things it was displacing, such as things I could be doing with and for others, and the time it took away from my family.
No one has unlimited resources, no matter what they think. Perhaps committing to the understanding that any obsession displaces things that should be more important will help you find that all-important balance others have mentioned.

There are other brands. I buy what I really want, and now that i got 4 I am pretty settled. I don't like a collection where I cannot where all my watches because I got too many.
