Have 5 digit models lost some popularity?

Curious to know your thoughts.

I’ve observed the market over the last year. I find that prices on 5 digit subs have been going down

(This time last year a full kit 16610 was averaging around $9000-$9800 CAD)

Now I see they can’t fetch 8500

Also, I see a lot less incomings on the forum, and much less talk about 5 digit models.

Has anyone else noticed this? If so, why do you think the reason is?

Cheers

I’ve noticed the opposite. The 16710 has been skyrocketing. 16610lv’s have also remained very strong. And even the 16570 has been starting to pick up as of late. Yeah the 16610 has lagged a bit. But I think it’s more from the popularity of all the other 5-digits being so strong.

As classic as 5 digits are, they are not vintage and are vastly overpriced for what they are in this market. Almost as expensive as a BNIB ceramic model. Doesnt make sense, even if you dont like the new supercase. Just my opinion.

I had a 16610 full set 2006 model that I bought last year which I have sold very recently and made about £250 profit. Can't complain but do agree with the post above that 5 digits are vastly overpriced at the moment.

Are the prices crazy? Depends. For me the 5 digits are a better looking watch, but others prefer the 6.

Yep, no warranty but a service sorts that.

It’s just personal choice. There’s obviously enough of a market to justify the price and they are selling. Just look at the 16710.

got my 16600 less than a year ago for 7k... all the asking prices are now minimum 8k.

no idea if they are selling but i guess thats one indication that the 5 serials are not in "decline" if anything stayed same

I have just bought a 5 digit polar expii. The prices for these seem to flying up. Looking at £6k ish for a complete nice one from 2007. When I looked at these a year ago they were a grand less! I actually had to pay £1100 more than when I bought the brand new 6 digit version 2 or 3 years ago!

I still see the 14060/14060m prices climbing currently and they have become quite expensive. I think the vintage look of 2-lines is going to keep it appealing to many who want the 4-digit models but can't/won't pay the 4-digit price.

Year and half ago I've bought 14060M, sold it month ago with 1k EUR profit, so really haven't seen any decline in demand. Prices (at least in Europe) are going up monthly for almost every model. 4-digit Rolexes went through the roof already and if you want classic case and materials model you have to go 5-digit. 5-digits are no longer made and there are less and less well preserved, non-overpolished examples.

Most overpriced Rolexes right now are current professional models, buying GMT 100% more than retail is nuts. Black GMT wasn't hot at all until Basel, and now suddenly you have huge markup. 5-digit prices grown steadily over years, in 6-digits prices I see some real aberrations.

Some are already vintage, just wanted to say 1990 was 30 years ago...

Bingo. Currently 5 digit GMTs and SubLVs can longer be found for less than 2-4 times their original MSRPs. Demand is still higher than supply for quality models for sale especially 2004 or newer GMTs.

As folks mentioned the 5 digit black Subs are still a good selling but haven’t seen the demand as the 2 models mentioned above. There's a ton of supply out there to meet the demand.

Forget about 5 digit Daytona models. That rocket has already blasted and is still going up and up. Demand is insane.

Note: take a look at Sheldon's historical price chart and compare to today's going rates.

Tried on 16610LN yesterday (2007 model in first class condition). Own 116600 and 116610LN & DJ41. In a quandry about which ones to leave to my 3 sons mainly due to potential value set against the fact they were Dads watches. Anyway the reason I love the SD4K is the narrower lugs. The 16610 was surprisingly light, presumably from hollow links and less sophisticated clasp. That said it wore better than I expected and it would be a pleasure to own one. Its the last of the classic shaped Subs with narrow lugs which is never a bad thing. Seriously tempted to go down the birth year route for my sons get them all 5 digit subs and be done with it

5 digit cases are more classic IMO. but definitely overpriced

but rolex SS scarcity has pushed the 5 digit prices into the stratosphere.

I love 5 digit cases, but have yet to own one. I have a hard time paying just as much, if not more than I did for my 6 digit GMT. I may hold off, and hope that Rolex introduces something similar down the road. I'd even be all over a new Explorer 36mm.

Tudor (BB58) is another alternative to 5 digit cases. I'm hoping they release a new version soon without the gold lettering.

I can’t get over the plots on the 5 digits. Just too small after being used to the six digit plots. I’d imagine many others feel the same. The only 5 digit I would buy anymore is a Pepsi.

I agree that the small plots are hard on the eyes after getting used to a maxi dial. I could get used to it though!
