16613 - Thoughts
So guys, I need a piece of advice.
I have never really given the 16613 any thought, but now I have the chance to buy one, and it kinda got me intrigued. So the details: Rolex Submariner Two Tone 16613 Year 1998 Only one owner Full set with everything, including original receipt! Serviced this year Price: 9900€ / 11600$ As I said, I have never given this watch too much thought, so naturally I don’t know too much about it, besides it being a beautiful watch! The questions in my mind are: - Is this a good buy? - Is this sought out piece, does it have potential? - Is the price fair? Any thoughts about future value? - The Oyster bracelet is in god condition but has some wear and tear. Is it a good idea to get this polished? Overall, is it a good idea to give the whole watch god polish overhaul? Give me your thoughts. |

Answering your questions in order:
1. Price seems fair. 2. Two-tone Rolexes are generally not highly sought after. 3. This would be a watch to keep, not one to flip. 4. Watch and bracelet would benefit from a sympathetic polish. Buffer would be okay for the bracelet, case would be hand-polish only. |

Price seems fair, as wsfarrell said.
Service - was it an 'approved' genuine quality service depot, and is there an actual invoice (NEVER go by word of mouth.) I have a year 2000 16613 blue dial and it is just about my favorite Rolex. Just beautiful. If I were in the market I would not hesitate to scoop up that offering.

Thank you so much for the great input guys!
To clarify my question regarding the sought after and value part. I am not looking to flip it, but let’s say I get tired of it in maybe a year or two, or I just want to change it for something else, than the ideal thing would be that the value was the same or maybe even a slight increase in value. Is that realistic? As for the polishing, I know that I am not buying a new watch. But I do think it would look better if it was polished. Previous owner has never done anything to it, so it’s 14 years of wear. I think I’m the right hands, this could get a nice polish and it could look almost brand new? As for service, yes it is from a known and respected second-hand Rolex dealer. |

1) I won't go there for future value. Especially as I know nothing about that.
2) A GOOD PROPER polishing will not damage your watch and would enhance the way it looks. A nice polish was done on my year 1987 Oyster Perpetual date and it looks great, just like new again. Would I do it again? - - - ABSOLUTELY YES!!!! Ignore the "DO NOT POLISH" crowd here. Polishing is a personal decision and there is nothing wrong or evil about having watches polished. If you want it polished, do it. It is YOUR watch anyway, so make it the way YOU want to have it.

I bought my A serial 13 months ago. It’s gained about 3k from the purchase price according to C24. It is a great watch to wear and enjoy, it goes with anything and can handle anything you throw at it. If the scratches bother you get it polished, however please know it will get scratched again. I think PCL’s inherently wish they were brushed because it seems they try like hell to get there. If it sings to you, the provenance adds up and you’ve got the funds I wouldn’t hesitate. The price can very easily fluctuate as with anything so don’t buy expecting to make money on it.

Buy it. Send it to Rolex. Throw out the internet fears on a modern watch like that.
If you can go to GVA I would hand deliver it and hand pick it up. You will have bought a new watch. |
