Good 1680 on the bay?

I missed out on this one.
The pics aren't good, but it seemed like a decent example.
Are there some flaws that made this not a good deal, or maybe prices are dropping?

Looks pretty good to me. It's challenging to assess the dial with those overexposed images, but there are no major flaws that stand out.

A big gamble for someone because of the lack of detail in the photos of the dial in the listing, and I think the price reflects that. The lume on the hands looks a little funky in color, and it's cracking on hour hand.

I'd rather pay more for a better example and no potential headaches.

Maybe you could replace the hands Correct and color matched and you’re still around 11 five right?
Well-known sellers have ones that are beat to hell for way more than that now

It seems cheap
I don’t think the lume problems would cost much to address

I was watching this as well. Slightly poorer pics might have detracted some from bidding but frankly you could have asked for better pics. Either way, feels on the cheaper side, especially with a band as well. Whoever won this did well is my sense.

How do these two on Chrono24 look/compare to the ebay one?
I think the US one has a nicer case perhaps...
the insert looks good, long 5, on the MX one.

Good 1680 on the bay?

The first one looks good. Mk2 dial. Correct insert. Correct bracelet. 5 million serial. Perfect if your name is Victor.

I would stay away from the 2nd one. 4.4 million serial is likely a replacement case. The dial is a service dial. Insert is service.

Agree with JC.

The insert isn't a traditional "long 5" though.

The annoying thing is 3 months ago, there were a few 1680 for sale at the $9.5K mark, now all $11K plus. Apparently the general economy has "improved"....

is it a regular 5, fat font insert?

I never saw those 9.5k 1680's this year, dang.

I dont know the MK (so many) sorry.

Yeah one of them was asking $9500 but now at $11495 on C24. I waited and waited hoping to find one at a good price but it just kept going up and up.

there is one on C24 thats sub $9000, pictures are poor so maybe ask him for better close ups. The case looks soft and the hands might be replacements.

Sure, you could do that, but that can be a nightmare, trying to find a correct set of tritium hands with matching patina. And color-matched hands .... eh. I never like a doctored dial or hands.

Again, I'd rather pay more for an all-original example that doesn't need restoration. Dropping close to $10K on an eBay watch is very risky. There are rarely shortcuts to good examples of vintage Rolexes.

Ebay uses escrow now. I think it has to be over 10k though, so no risk in those deals.

I have a good source for hands but wouldn’t touch the dial.
Always ask for better pics if you’re serious.

I think you always end up paying in the end. Whether it is buying parts or paying a watchmaker. I learned the hard way on my 16750, then I find out my dial was washed when I sold it.

You want a 1680 right? I swear I have seen some reasonably priced 79 1680s recently.

I’m always looking for watches. I follow a lot of the small resellers on IG.

Jacek just had a nice one recently. It was 13-14k. At this very moment I don’t know where any are, but I remember thinking the last time I saw one “wow those haven’t gone crazy yet”.

It’s not a super in demand watch. Maybe something has changed. Most ppl want the 5513 or the early date sub. The white, matte dial date subs don’t seem super expensive.

The two watches that seem late to the stupid price party are the late 1680 and the late 70’s/80’s Tudor 94110.

put away the thought of getting these for sub $10K now if you want to pick up a decent piece. I think the $11K mark isn't too bad.

Jeez, with tax that’s 14k for one with a service dial. Crazy times!

Your saying this 1979 watch has a service dial? The mkii isn’t the original dial?

I think you're right about it being a mkii.
The sixes look just a little open to me which is the only aspect that looks service.

its a Mark II dial. The service dials have a different font though similar wording proportions.

I guess buying from outside Cali makes sense. I wasn’t thinking of sales tax.

I struggle with some of the 1680 dial variations...is this one an original mk2 or a service type C ?

Should be Mark 2. The Service Type C "L" in Rolex is notably more offcentered to the left.
