Calatrava 5196: R or J?

Hi all,

I’m currently in the process of deciding whether to purchase a 5196 R or J. I seem to like the dial of the J better (silver opaline) than the R (silver gray) but in terms of metal i prefer the R. I also plan to wear this for casual days.

Which one would you choose?

I prefer the R for a dress watch. I have the 5712r and couldn’t be happier. I prefer YG on sports watches like my Sub though.

What color is your skin? I think the J would be a better combination with either a dark or light skinned person. The R with more in between.

I prefer everything about the YG better. RG is a difficult metal as a lot depends on your skin tone. RG is also hard to match other metals with such as belt buckles, eyeglass frames, wedding bands, class rings etc. I have owned RG before and the second hand market is also more narrow for individuals looking for RG.

I’m light skinned...not necessarily looking to make this my dress watch per se, it could be but I also plan to wear this with jeans.

I bought the 5196R - purely because I like the opaline more. The J version is equally beautiful, so there is no wrong choice.

I prefer R to J so that would be the primary factor here.

The J, because of the dial, though for dress watches i like a lot the look between RG cases and leather straps. In your place, for getting a J or R, i would ask the Patek AD for an additional black or navy leather strap, so it would become more versatile.

I opted for G, but if I were to choose between J and R, it would be R.

I am in the mental process of convincing myself to spring for my first Patek and am looking to go with the 5196R. It’s really amazing and About two months ago said I didn’t need a dress watch but the more I look and try it on it truly can be versatile. Like Someone above there are a ton of strap options to change the look, looked at those last week also to further push me over the ledge!

I wear a Calatrava 3520DR. The rose gold is (to me) warmer and richer than yellow. I wear a rose gold signet ring. On the other side I wear as my daily, a PP Neptune in yg and stainless.

Either is fine, in the current market the R is far more popular and desirable. Yellow gold watches are coming back but not in a big way yet. Rolex is able to sell yellow gold but it is limited in offerings from other companies.

I was under the impression that the J is the opaline dial...at least, whiter, than the R...I may be wrong.

Between those two I would choose R although the G is my absolute favorite.

You're not wrong, the J is the one with the opaline dial.

Thanks for confirming. How I wish all three dials were the same color!

Ah! Thanks for the correction. Then it’s the non-opaline one I preferred. The r dial has a special sheen that I like.

I think the "R" looks a little richer, whatever that means. I vote R

Very nice! Did you make the purchase? I’m not sure Tiffany would be the best AD to establish a relationship with. Seems like they would have exceptionally long waiting periods for the more desirable references.

Nope I did not and won’t. You are spot on they told me if I got this an annual calendar and a watch for my wife i could apply for a 5711 or 5167!! And the current list is 6years!!
