Calling all Patek experts -- rose or yellow 3796?

Hi all,

Writing with a question that seems to be tricking my brain, my eyes, or both...

Earlier this year, I picked up a 3796R after much deliberation (I tried putting a link in here to the thread about it, but my post count is too low...). I sent it off to Patek for servicing and also ordered an extract of the archives. Both confirmed that it is, in fact a 3796R. It came back a couple of months ago, after which point I've been wearing it occasionally.

The thing is, the more I wear it, the less sure I am that it is rose gold -- in many lighting scenarios, it looks downright yellow. For example, the first picture below was taken in a bright, artificially-lit room, on a white background. To me, this looks like yellow gold.

Then, the second one was taken in the AD, when I went in to get it sent for service to Patek. This one, to me, looks like in-between.

The third was taken in a different room, with different lighting, in which it looks much closer to rose gold.

Then, for comparison's sake, I've included two photos of a vintage Omega Seamaster that is rose gold plated. The first was taken in the same room as the third photo of the Calatrava, and to me, looks rose gold. The fourth has both watches side by side, in which they both look yellow....

Bottom line -- am I going crazy? Is this a rose or yellow gold watch? If it is rose, are my eyes playing tricks on me? Clearly, Patek confirmed that it is rose in both the servicing and the extract. But then, if so, why does it look so yellow? Is there a chance that the color has changed or faded over time, or is it just a matter of lighting?

Thanks to anyone who can provide some insight!

Rose seems to be the current trend

Thanks! Just to make sure I understand, current trend as in, that's what the pictures show? Or do you just mean that rose gold is popular?

It looks clearly YG to me but photos can easily deceive. If the AD says RG I'd probably believe it.

If PP says it’s rose, then i would tend to believe them. I just don’t know if it “fades” to yellow over time, to me it looks yellow in the photos.

P.S. Nice watch by the way. Congratulations!

I prefer the YG. Easier to match with other metals.

There are different shades of RG hues, Red Gold is probably the most "rose" because ( I think ) it contains more copper. Then there is pink gold which is a much lighter hue. It all varies depending on lighting. As long as your PP certificate serial number matches, then that description is accurate.

For example, my 5205R can looks like yellow gold in these pics

And then more rose gold in these pics :

Whether looking more like rose or yellow gold, this is one nice looking piece!

From my understanding, rose gold can fade toward yellow gold over time. I believe this has something to do with why Rolex calls theirs, Everose

Thanks, everybody. Based on the responses here, it seems like the answer is somewhere between lighting and fading over time....

Hope I’m not digging up too old a thread, but I’ve done some investigation, and it looks like I might be able to resolve the issue, but wanted folks’ input:

So according to one AD and Patek itself, a light polish and refinish could bring out the rose color and make it look closer to the original appearance. That said, when I sent this in for service earlier this year, I opted out of the polish because, as we all know, the polishing removes case material, could change shape, etc.

So, does anyone have experience with Patek refinishing/lightly polishing a case? Can you say whether and to what degree the rose tone of the watch will be restored, compared to its current, yellowish appearance? And if so, is it worth it to go through with it? Thanks in advance!

First let me say that all 18k gold has different alloys mixed in to provide strength. Pure gold is very weak. One of the alloys mixed in with gold is copper to produce Rose Gold. It does NOT fade over time.

I have sent dozens of watches into PP for service, including polishing. You will not be able to detect any change in case proportions.

Thanks, James! So would you recommend getting it polished? Based on the view that rose gold does not fade over time, it would seem that a polishing or case refinishing won't actually change the color or appearance of the case -- or would it?

I prefer the rose in this reference. I do not like the rose with rose dial which was also made. Needs the silver dial.
