You don't know what you are talking about with regard to Rolex.

That's a great comparison Dave

Same holds true when you wear something vintage and then switch to a modern Rolex, the weight difference is substantial.

We're talking WG vs. PL.

Stainless steel is not a precious metal and is dirt cheap, so who cares about its purity?

I thought I might add, as conversation, along the thought lines of comparing the prices of the metal.

Usually, an 18k Gold alloy is roughly 75% actual gold, the rest its supporting metals and whatnot.

Usually, a platinum alloy is roughly 95% actual platinum, give or take, depending on if you include the platinum-sisters as platinum, or not you can give or take another percentage point.

Thus, volume wise the gold in your watch is worth 75% of its unit price per unit of space, so 75% of 1200, say, is 900,

and volume wise, the plat in your watch is worth maybe 95% of its unit price per unit of space, so of 950, is 902.5.

So, because of their alloys, they're rough the same (right now) along these fun terms here.

I, of course, would say plat and WG are a tie for me. Here's waiting for the plat submariner with ice blue face.

The fact that there’s no material loss with polishing clinches it for me. Platinum all the way. That said, 99.99% of the world will think it’s steel.

There is definitely material loss, just not as much as ss or gold as platinum is more malleable. It is an odd duck to polish for sure, definitely not my favourite thing to do.

I've owned both - Platona and Smurf - and honestly, they both have weight and both scratch, so for me it comes down to the individual watch. To get a blue d9ial sub it is WG; for ice blue daytona it is platinum. Both superb watches.

I looked at the Pt Day Date and found it boring in comparison to the WG. The WG has the beautiful bezel while not so with the Pt. The Pt is almost too plain. Besides, you can buy two WGs for the price of one Pt.

Funny because that’s why I like it. Not a fan of fluted bezels even on my Everose DD. Wish I that choice.

Would you mind elaborating why it’s different to polish. Just curious.

So when polishing gold and steel you can see scratches and dents disappear when you polish, with platinum you'll need to work it really hard to get any type of result, takes much longer to achieve the same result.

There is still a metal shine on the polishing wheels after you're done, indicating loss of material, but it is by no means as much as steel or gold.

PT950 is much more heavier than the WG model and it is more bright and shiny. The WG got a little bit of a yellow tints to it that I doesn’t like. Out of all Rolex PM model, I like the everose gold the most.

the exact reasons I love platinum. also that its 95% pure vs. 75% helps too and that its significantly more rare than gold as well.

It's too bad that it is likely difficult to get to try on a platinum watch for an extended period before purchase. I never did, but didn't worry about whether the weight would be uncomfortable. It isn't.

When you pick up a platinum watch, its weight is really noticeable, and you feel it when you first strap it on. After a very brief period (seconds?, a minute?), you forget it's there, unless you think about it. Then you can feel its presence due to its weight (not its mystical properties, lol).

I wear my band fairly tight, and imagine that a loose bracelet might not be so comfortable. But as long as its tight enough to stay pretty much in place, but not strangle your wrist, it's very comfortable.

I guess it's a leap of faith, as most ADs would probably not want you to wear it for half an hour in the store to decide.

It’s really elegant but I fell in love with Everose. Outside in a cloudy day the color is incredible. Once I saw it I never seriously considered anything else.

Polishing Platinum is a real b...h. I’ve done it with laboratory equipment and appreciate anyone that does it well.

That is true. Wonder what that would weigh in platinum! The relatively slight Platona is seriously massive:

I would rather a WG GMT + a WG Daytona than a Platona.
Thought about it hard as the 116506A with factory diamond bezel is a sexy beast, but the price difference just isn’t logical for me.

White gold vs platinum

White gold has some warm yellow and rose tint added to the white shine of the added platinum and palladium to the yellow gold and copper mixed in. It’s like having 3 watches in one. Plus you have all the history of the yellow gold Day Dates in the material of the white gold DD being primarily yellow gold in material. I love the white gold and platinum equal. However I do love the weight of the platinum more.
