I think it is all about design. I highly doubt most people buying the SUB really need the extra debt for diving, and both the GMT II and Explorer II have the GMT-function.

If you look at the submariner and GMT-Master II they have very, very similar design and I think Rolex hit the nail on the head with that design. Seems like everyone loves it. While the Explorer II stands out with a completely different design. However I too prefer the Explorer II design, but I believe we who does are maybe one out twenty or thirty.

The 216570, w/ it's brushed bracelet & brushed, fixed bezel, is the last true tool watch in the current Rolex lineup. I say this as an owner of a 214270 as well, which w/ it's polished bezel looks less tool & more half tool/half dress.

The Ex2 isn't shiny or blingy like a SubC or GMTc - it flies under the radar from non-WIS people & I like that, wouldn't have it any other way.

I rarely see 214270's out in the wild, same w/ 216570's

Subs & GMT's are spotted in the wild all the time.

Wouldn't change a thing about any of this.

Long live the Freccione.

The Sub/GMT both play it safe. They are not offensive to anybody. 40mm, ceramic bezels, works for everyone. The Explorer II is bigger, more bold, big orange hand, brushed steel bezel. THere's just no way it's going to work for everybody. But those of us who like it seem to really like it.

I own a GMT and used to have an SD4K. I like them, but I alway prefer the Explorer II. I'm strongly considering adding the polar. Then I'd have a seriously difficult decision to make every morning.

I have long been drawn to the Explorer II. It's a man's watch. I had the 40 and gave it to my son when I got the 42. It's different, which is why I like it. So many submariners. So few Explorer IIs. Be different. One of the few white faces offered by Rolex. Wear it with pride.

The beauty of it, and this may have already been said, is that it can be dressed up or down. I think this is especially true with the 40. It is different and most people won't recognize it as a Rolex unless they know watches, but isn't that part of the beauty? If it is recognized chances are people will respect the fact that it isn't a GMT Master or Submariner (Nothing against these at all).

I just was able to get my first Rolex, a black dial 16570, and I can already say it will be a permanent fixture to my collection.

NATO straps for the 216570, where to buy in the EU?

I’m having trouble finding them in 21mm. Preferably gray, olive green and coyote brown straps.

A polar 16570 may be in my future. I love the GMT but it so similar to my Sub, batman model at least, that I think I'd want something different. The 5-digit Pepsi is the opposite of a value proposition and I can't bring myself to spend that $ on it and the new Pepsi is impossible to get so it's not an option in the first place.

It's the Rolex that no one would think is a Rolex at a glance. I love that white dial as it adds something different into a brand dominated by its black dial sports watches.

That being said, if I could only have one Rolex it wouldn't be the Explorer II.

Have had my polar 40mm for a little over a year. My only gripe is that the lume really does suck (especially the hands). But I went with this because I wanted an everyday Rolex and this certainly fits the bill. The other models are a lot more flashy and although it's not a bad thing, it's not ideal for every day every place imo.

When I read through the long history of comments here, I think the majority of owners have the 40mm version. I love the look of my 42mm black which is why I bought it but it will take a little getting used to regarding size. My vintage GMT Pepsi is about 38mm which fits like a glove. I have a 7" wrist.

The movements are different in Exp II and GMT II.

GMT II (before 2018) - 3186 movement
GMT II (after 2018) - 3285 movement
Current Exp II - 3187 movement

Cases are completely different. GMT II 40mm and Exp II 42mm

It’s a tough watch. Wear it with a suit or doing yard work.

I think it makes it much truer to the originals since they were used for exploring muddy caves!
